Here in North America the General Motors owners' manuals for their vehicles that have the 2.2 Liter Ecotec engine recommend 5W30 oil with 10W30 being acceptable when temperature is above -18C. Actually, the manual for my Chev Cavalier even goes so far as to say that "if 5W30 is not available" 10W30 is acceptable above -18C. I have read that European vehicle manufacturers tend to recommend thicker oil for their engines.

Therefore, being aware that the 2.2 Ecotec in my General Motors product is the same engine that is used in various models in Europe, I would like to know what the European manufacturers recommend for oil in these motors?

Thank you for the information. I was wondering if maybe they were recommending 5W30 to meet North American Government requirements for fuel consumption for their overall group of models sold. However, I am beginning to conclude that they are recommending 5W30 because it provides better lubrication for the engine especially during warmup.
