I'd look into the car's service history if it's through an existing Daewoo dealership ? I should have requested this before buying my 2000, 1.6 L . The previous owner probably serviced it poorly , causing engine damage. ( top half rebuilt, but they didn't check cylinder head !?(cracked,) and twice had head gasket changed under warranty thankfully) Definately consider a warranty program if offerred . also check to see if the recalls were done. ( two wiring harnesses under each front seat, and torque settings for tires ( 88 ft lbs versus 66 - otherwise possible tires loosening while braking / cornering on highways ) might be worth the charge for www.carfax.com to look up the car's history if you can obtain its VIN number. I wish I had of researched more. I could have just got a lemon, because I know someone who has had a Daewoo for years and drove a lot of miles. He influenced me to get mine at a great price too.do some homework for sure. also , don't believe the salesman when he tells you G.M. can service the car since they bought Daewoo a couple years ago. They can't fully service it ( computer diagnostics not possible) - Some major auto service chains do have very good diagnostics . I live in Canada, and Canadian Tire's report was very similar to Daewoo dealership in Toronto. Good luck.

We have a 2000 Lanos. There were a few recall items performed
to it and we had a crack in the plastic elbow of the cooling line.
Also the brakes seem rather harsh on the rotors, even though we
don't drive it that much. It is my wife's commuter vehicle and she
is quite a conservative driver. I only drive every few weeks or so
just for fun and to feel for problems. As always it is very fun to drive,
I would describe the handling as zippy. It may not be a super rocket,
but it definitely moves in regular urban traffic with just one or two
people in it. I would love this car more if it wasn't so short and I wasn't
so tall. I'd rather drive it than get in & out of it.
So far we have about 35,000 miles on it and we are very happy with it.
We bought the extended warranty at time of purchase and although we
lost the paperwork AND we moved to another region of the state,
the local dealership had all our info in their system and covered the
repair of the afore mentioned cracked elbow.
All in all, if you live anywhere near a dealership and the price/ condition
seem right, then it is definitely worth serious consideration.

PS- GM seems confident in Daewoo, the new Aveo is actually
the "Matiz" in Korea and it is POPULAR.

Just keep that timing belt and related parts changed - before 60K miles, and buy a plastic thermostat housing and you're home free. A new less restictive muffler and 2.5" cone air filter really helps too. Lanos is no worse than any other Jap, Korean car. I've enjoyed zipping around in mine, parking where no one else can, and small bills at the gas station. I bough a bunch a spare parts and never needed any but the gasket to the thermostat. Put new platinum plugs in it and I cann't keep it under 80mph on the interstate - seriously. Only had to put on new rotors and pads (do it your self and save) and tires and wipers so far - excellent. I give this SX automatic three stars.:grinyes:

Yikes, it's been over 2 years since this thread began, but I think I have the same problem with the hose going to the block. I can't change my oil, so bear with my ignorance. There's a hose that goes from my radiator to (I think) the 'block;' well, this became disconnected and my engine coolant light peaked quickly. Is this fixable? If so, how much?
God, thanks for any advice that you can give!!!
