Lookin to possibly buy this car and want to get some feedback. I know the car needs a head gasket. I am capable of replacing it myself.

What I am looking for with this post is .... any advice regarding the HG replacement... what else should I look for with regards to this car.

Thanks! appreciate any comments

Head gasket is difficult & requires special tools. If it has an external leak that is at the front side of the head above the transmission it is more likely the plastic housings that hold the thermostat.

I will ask that question... Are you saying that it is something that should not be attempted if not qualified? What sort of tools are out of the ordinary to perform this job?

Thanks!

I suggest getting a good manual to decide. Alot of libraries actually keep them.

Thanks for your help. Found out today that the car was sold. I am now looking at 3 others. Would appreciate your thoughts on these:

- 1993 passat glx vr6 5 speed 162,320k miles. Not driven since 10/04 ($2K)
- 1991 VW Passat GL Wagon 150K... needs muffler, new timing belt, been sitting for 6+ months (<$1,000)
- 1993 VW Passat GLX with 133,000... driven daily ($1500 firm)

You are aware of the problematic nature of those year Passats....

I have read alot of the problems... Car is $650. Honestly, should I look for a different vehicle? I am handy... but dont want to be dating the foreign auto parts guy. I am not totally hooked on this car.... I like VWs. or any reliable car for that matter!

If it's a manual I'd consider it. Stay away from the automatics for sure.
