oxygen sensor code PO135 & misfire in #5

Just had my code checked since the check engine light was flashing. I have an o2 sensor heater failure but couldn't tell which bank it is from. Any ideas.

Also, having misfire in #5.(rt rear cyl) No idea how old the plugs are and thinking of changing them all. OEM is platinums at about 9.00 a pop right?

I just bought this truck and have no prior maintenence information. I am a reasonably skilled DIY but hate taking chances with my only transportation and limited budget. Sometimes it is cheaper to pay a pro. Is their any tricky work here?

Easy one. P0135= O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1) That's the driver's side, before the catalytic converter O2 sensor. As far as the cyl 5 misfire goes?, I'd start by examining the spark plug boots & plugs. Your 1997 should run fine in NGK's, but for sure it will like denso plugs (www.sparkplugs.com)

Alright, we have a tie. One says driver side, one say passanger side. What says you?

Odd cylinders (1,3,5) = Odd Bank
Even cylinders = Even Bank

Bank 2 is definitely the Driver's side! I found out the hard way. But you should probably replace both at the same time anyway. If one is bad, the other will probably also go soon. It can only help your performance to do so.

I stiopped on the way home tonight and figured, what the heck and bought 2 of the sensors. I plan to replace them tomorow and will let you all know how it went.

Can you believe Autozone didn't have NGK or Denso (sp?) plugs. Napa here I come

Thanks for all the input here

NGK's are hard to find. You can usually find them only at motor-sport or import specialty shops. Denso's are near impossible to find locally. Try www.sparkplugs.com

You'll have more luck at Advance Auto Parts for parts on these cars. Advance carries NGK's.

Napa had only had bouch and I had to go to 2 stores to get 6. I changed the preconverter o2 sensors and that only took an hour including one trip inside for a band aid. (no job is complete without shedding some blood).

The big problem is I still have a misfire in #5. This is a 97 V6 so it has the coil packs on each plug. Can those be tested with a ohm meter? Any other suggestions BTW the Bousch are platinum OEM recommended but were only about 2.95 ea. I was expecting 6.00 or so.

I think you can just move the coil pack. if the misfire moves with the coil pack then I think you can say it is the coil pack.

I moved the coil pack from #5 to #3 and the misfire went from #5 to #3. Hmmm I think we have a bad coil pack here. These are not very common parts and their is only 1 in the Phoenix Metro area (population 3.5 million). Thats at an Isuzu dealership $123.00. Honda (it is a Passport) has 1 600 miles away. Aftermarket shops were all special order $100-$130.00 range.
