any one know the actual pro-con differences between the two transfer cases, 231 and 242?

I'm 51, have owned jeeps of some sort or other my whole life. I also sold them from 91 to 95. My fave is the 231. All the jeep mechs I've known prefer it for its simplicity and durability. Its also easy to find parts for and easy to upgrade. Its been around so long that salvage yard parts are fairly easy to obtain. the 242 is a tough case as well, but has almost twice the parts and not as easy to upgrade to off road. If you dont mind the manual shift to 4x4 go 231. If you want the ease of putting it in 4x4 and leaving it all winter then go 242. Other than the shift options I'm not aware of any real pros and cons between them. both are great. Jeep still builds the best 4x4 for the money!

you can get a tera-low for the 231, but the 242 is limited if you go bigger than 33's and want a serious rig. what are you trying to accomplish?
