Tie Rod QuestionsPsychogamer247 04-15-2005, 05:04 PM I went to go get an alignment on my ZJ and got an estimate that said I needed a Left Outer Tie Rod and Left Sleeve. I went to research it and got into more than I could handle. :banghead: Do I need a tie rod for my steering or my suspension and what does a tie rod sleeve look like ? SteveB05 04-15-2005, 05:28 PM The good news is the one on the left side is the shortest (least expensive). It looks like a threaded bar with a ball joint on the outter end bolted to the wheel hub assembly (knuckle). Next is the sleeve, which is a short, hollow "tube" with bolts on each end that pinch it to the rods, then is the right tie rod that goes to the right assembly. Connected to the right rod is the drag link, which goes up toward the steering box and has another sleeve on it. Sleeves are not normally replaced. Is it bent or totally rusted? I would have them show you what they suggest be replaced and why. Psychogamer247 04-15-2005, 08:26 PM They said that the tie rod is bent so i assume that the sleeve bent too. What is the sleeves purpose? dksob81 04-15-2005, 10:13 PM The purpose of the sleeve is, it's what they adjust to adjust you toe in/out of your wheels. I just replaced my Tie rod ends, tie rod, and drag link less then a month ago. this is what you need (depending upon your year and engine size) http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker/?UseCase=C001&UserAction=answerRequiredQuestion&Parameters=%7C%7ELEFT+HAND+SIDE+%28SITTING+INSIDE+ VEHICLE%29&PageSync=2 mx52nv 04-16-2005, 01:58 AM you should check with your local u-pull-it salvage yards for a v8 model if yours is an I6. the front steering is beefier on the v8 and I picked mine up for $10 with good ends. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
