I think my Jeep is stuck in 4x4. The steering in my Jeep starts binding when I turn my steering wheel to the far left or right. It actually stops until I straighten the steering wheel. Even trying to back out of my parking space, I smell smoke, like burning brakes. Please tell me it just needs something really cheap.

What system do you have? 242 Part time,full timeand 2WD or 249 full time and low. If you have the 249 it sounds like your VC Viscous Coupler going out. If you have the full time 249 Transfer Case a quick way to check is to remove the front drive shaft for a short time and see if the problem goes away. If it does it is your VC which is $500 for another VC if you do it your self unless you buy a used transfer case at a salvage yard.

The burning smell has me wondering.I never smelled a bad vc
