SPL= Sound Pressure Level (literal meaning)
This is basically...loudness...
SQ= Sound Quality
SQL= Mix of both
Subs are not technically any of them, they may just be associated with one more than the other.

thanks. so sql is typically what you are going for unless you're doing dB drag racing

some SPL subs (DP's, MT's ect...) can still sound pretty good...... its just a general association with what the sub is used for most. Getting a sub to be loud as hell or have great sq is mostly in the enclosure and not the sub its self.....notice I said mostly them cheap ass flea market brands aren't gunna get loud or sound good in any enclosure.

not always...there are thoes who spend a gagillion dollars on Rainbow front stage and never play them over 100dB's....SQ freaks = ghey....there are no bragging rights IMO...of course if you are as suttle as those type guys/girls you dont brag or care....you just want good music...
