94 JGC steering binds up when turning sharplytippet 04-10-2005, 10:01 PM First ...this is my first post here and I'll preface this by saying thanks in advance for any and all help ...I have a 94JGC which when taking a sharp turn will "bind up" and hesitate (practically stop )through the turn. I had the power steering pump replaced by one mechanic, sway bar, CV joints by another when the last mechanic swore to me it was the transfer case.. low and behold tc was void of fluid. We replaced it and it ran fine till our first outing where car was driven longer than 10 minutes over 40mph... ( we live on an island and car rarely is driven over 40 and for more than 10min at a clip ) Mechanic said tc needed to be replaced and he did so with a used one for under a grand... "3" fluid changes in less than 2 months later and we still have same problem..it didnt seem to be as bad till season turned and it grew warmer outside.... any ideas??? xj31 04-10-2005, 11:23 PM its most likely the viscous coupler in the t-case also known as the"VC".theres probably 1000 posts here about the exact problem.Since the coupler is a sealed unit inside of the t-case,all the fluid changes in the world will not help it.It has its own silicone fluid inside of it,and since it is welded shut, you cant do anything to it except replace it.When you got a used t- case you got a used vc.In my experience, the 93-95 249 t-cases were the ones that had problems.96-98 use a different part number and it seems to be better. So if you go with another used t-case,that's something to consider CTCarpenter 04-11-2005, 08:16 AM Viscous coupler is available from Zurke bearing (on ebay) for 400.00. My mechanic installed it for 120.00. teemsta 04-11-2005, 08:41 AM my 94 jgcl is doing the same thing. i disconnected the front drive shaft and it runs perfect, ijust put it back on for the winters. i also noticied an oil leak in the rear of the axle differentail where the drive shaft connects. would that be the problem? also what years transfercase can you put in a 94? my AWD, can a part time transfer case go right in without mods? except for gear selection indicator on console that is. cudastang 04-12-2005, 10:28 PM BEWARE! Mine was binding too. After reading this post,I took off the front driveshaft, went for a short drive and all was fixed.....Until I looked in the driveway for the jeep,it was 10-15ft farther down the driveway than where I parked it!!!! Think I'll be using my parking brake from now on,or parking in the street where its flat....My driveway has a slight slope to it,but still,I dont think it shoud be doing that!...... teemsta 04-13-2005, 10:32 AM funny you mentioned that because my jeep does the same thing even with the front drive shaft on. it inches away on hills. does that mean the transmission is going bad? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
