Bought a 2002 at 20,000 miles couple years ago. Drained the transmission and refilled at 40,000. Today it has 60,000. I drained both axles, and the transfer case for chage. The front axle has 1.7 quarts of 80-90 gear lube. It was some what dirty, not too bad. YOu have to remove the pan to drain and clean. Takes a little time, kind of cramped area. --The rear axle has 75-90 synthetic oil and it was crap. Very dark and dirty. Has a big pipe plug with 3/4 inch square drive drain and a 3/4 inch pipe plug above it to refill. Well worth the time. The synthetic gear lube cost me $8 quart at Auto Zone. Takes 1.7 quarts.--- 4 x 4 Transfer case holds 1.5 quarts of MERCON V. It looked o.k., but very simple to change.---Changed the bront brake pads also. Theey were about 80% worn. PLan on doing the rears next weekend.--- Still has the original tires.

if you saw what came out of the rear axle, you would be wise to change your oil prior to 60,000 miles. the front axle and transfer case dont seem to be a big problem.

Thanks for your post, I have 2003 xlt with a shimmy in the rear end when making sharp turns and accelerating. I am going to change the rear differential fluid and see if it helps.
