Recently i sold my 90 nissan 240sx in hopes to buy a 1990 300zx 2+2. I found out from someone that the manual recomends/says to use premium gas. Is it really necessary, since its not turbo or supercharged to do so, if so, what are some side affects of driving it using regular 87 octane gas? and anyway to get around it?I.E. octane boosters/fuelinjector cleaner?
Thanks for your help. :banghead: :2cents: :2cents:

if nissan says put it in there you better put it in there...i know gas is expensive but break down the difference between regular and premium. if you put 10 gallons in your tank. you will save $2.00 by using regular...

i dont know about you put $2.00 isnt much difference when you have already spent $20-$30...you see what i am saying.

anyways, put premium in your Z32. and you can use octane boosters but it will end up costing you more money unless you try some different houshold supplies that supposedly raise octane levels. but i have never experimented with these things so your better off talking to someone else.

A Tizzy???? I've just stated that the refinery's use Toluene (paint thinner) to raise the octane level in refined gas. Toluene is cheaper than gas where I live. Simple math. Toluene comes from gasoline, it's 117 octane. Now you can buy a can of octane booster for $2.95, or 5 gals. toluene for $4.95.
Tizzy's over!!!!!

Octane increases the flash point of gasoline. The higher the octane the hotter it needs to be before the gasoline will combust. When you increase compression ratios, or advance timing, the tempurature in the cylinder increases. Higher octane reduces knocking and pinging which is essentially the cylinder firing at the wrong time due to that increased tempurature. Some companies add different stuff to their higher octane fuels, but the main reason for higher octane in your average car is pretty much what I've outlined above. The lower the rating the less efficient combustion you will get. When you go lower than the recommended octane rating you decrease the efficiency of your combustion causing knocking and pinging which can lead to premature failure of your engine over time. If themanufacturer says to use it, use it. They don't put that warning on there to make you feel like your car is PREMIUM over a car with regular. That's a marketing gimmick by the Gasoline companies. The automaker would rather use lower octane fuel because it sells a car to have less expense after the purchase, but they would rather you don't blow your motor on insufficient fuel and think their product is crap, tell everyone you know and lose business.
