The Swap Is A Pain In The !@#%mellowboy 04-02-2002, 07:12 PM I can't get the axles out of my car! I need your help. What is the easiest way to get them out? I used the breaker bar and it wouldn't budge! Oh and the breaker bar broke on me! Please help me. 91zc 04-02-2002, 07:17 PM Are you talking about the axle nut?? If so put the car on the ground and get a nice sized ratchet and socket and then get a piece of pipe that will fit over it. Worked everytime for me. When you go to take the axles out you will need to Undo the 14 mm bolt holding the fork to the shock. Undo the 17mm nut and bolt holding the bottom of the fork to the lower arm Take the cotter pin out of castle nut holding the ball joint on. Undo the 17mm castle nut holding the lower ball joint on. Separate the ball joint Swing the hub outward and remove the outer joint from the hub Pry the inner join away from the transmission or intermediate shaft and remove the axle. mellowboy 04-02-2002, 07:29 PM Originally posted by 91zc Are you talking about the axle nut?? Thanks alot man. EightOhOne 04-02-2002, 09:36 PM yeah when i replaced my cv joint a while back, i had to go to homedepot and pick up a pipe that fit over my ratchet. (mine was about 6 feet :D ) I then had to jump on that fukker for about five minutes until the nut finally gave up. Oh yeah, be sure to bend that little tab thats on it out. then to get the ball joint separated, you can pound on the lowercontrol arm with a hammer :o i fixed my cv without taking apart the balljoint whatsoever, i wouldnt recommend it, its a real pain in the ass!!! mellowboy 04-03-2002, 09:26 AM Originally posted by EightOhOne yeah when i replaced my cv joint a while back, i had to go to homedepot and pick up a pipe that fit over my ratchet. Yeh i got me a heavy ass pipe and its about 4-5 ft long. I did unbend that tab and that shit wouldn't budge on me. I'm working on to get the fork out. Are sure its gonna work without takin the fork? Its too late anyways. I'm still workin on it. mellowboy 04-03-2002, 12:25 PM i'm having trouble takin the cotter pin out:( I been tryin to pull it out with the pliers and it wouldn't budge. Is there any easier way to get it out? Please help. Tried it but it still doesn't work. 91zc 04-03-2002, 04:25 PM Did you make sure to bend the ends to line up with the hole on the castle nut?? mellowboy 04-03-2002, 05:23 PM Originally posted by 91zc Did you make sure to bend the ends to line up with the hole on the castle nut?? Yeh one side is off and thats the driver side. The other side is being a bitch. Thats the side that i broke 2 breaker bars on. I did unbend it for sure though. velocitySiR 04-03-2002, 06:47 PM this is how i'd go get ur axel nut off, that's the hardest part w/out an impact, like they all said get a huge pipe for leverage and just stomp on it, then get a pickel fork (that giant metal fork) and slam that between ur control arm and ball joint till it breaks free and just pry down. be careful with the fork making sure you don't split the housing on your joints. if you have to disconnect your tierod end from the spinleknuckle and then you can just swing it wherever you need to, the axel will slide right out once you get a free shot at it. EightOhOne 04-03-2002, 07:01 PM oh yeah...that damn cotter pin....same problem as I had with mine. I tried pulling and lubing and heating that fucker up, no go. I ended up drilling it out of there:rolleyes: mellowboy 04-03-2002, 07:14 PM Originally posted by velocitySiR this is how i'd go get ur axel nut off, that's the hardest part w/out an impact, like they all said get a huge pipe for leverage and just stomp on it, then get a pickel fork (that giant metal fork) and slam that between ur control arm and ball joint till it breaks free and just pry down. be careful with the fork making sure you don't split the housing on your joints. if you have to disconnect your tierod end from the spinleknuckle and then you can just swing it wherever you need to, the axel will slide right out once you get a free shot at it. I do have a heavy ass pipe. We just bought our THIRD breaker bar and we just BROKE that one! Its really getting frusterating. I did get the cotter pin out but all i have to do is get that ONE axle nut off and i'm set to pull the engine out. I torched it, i lubricate it and it still wouldn't budge for nothing. I'm seriously about to give up just because that one bolt is really getting on my nerves. The otherside was so easy to come off i just don't know why the passenger side is hard!? Even with the impact gun wouldn't probably budge ...i guess i have to go get it from my friend and see if it works. What a frusterating day man:( velocitySiR 04-03-2002, 07:56 PM yah well if you are focusing breaker bars on it then ur gonna need a kickass impact to get it off like a snap on or ingersol rand.... the craftsman just won't cut it, if you score a good one just give it quick taps because they create the most torque at the beginning, then once you get pissed of just hold it to the bar... lol it'll come off one way or another. mellowboy 04-03-2002, 09:05 PM Originally posted by velocitySiR yah well if you are focusing breaker bars on it then ur gonna need a kickass impact to get it off like a snap on or ingersol rand.... the craftsman just won't cut it, if you score a good one just give it quick taps because they create the most torque at the beginning, then once you get pissed of just hold it to the bar... lol it'll come off one way or another. Well my friend does have a snap on impact. I think its called blue bird or someshit. Anyways..........IT FINALLY CAME OFF!!:D My friends dad came by to help and all he brung was a hammer and a chizel! Man i'm so happy ...come on ppl lets have a group hug;) Now tomorrow the engine comes out! I'll keep you guys updated ! Later and thanks for the help i appreciate that:) nemo_wolf 04-05-2002, 10:29 AM Congrats man! I hope the hard work is worth it! No offense intended ...
