White smoke out of tail pipeinforcer958 04-06-2005, 07:46 PM I am restoring a 85 el camino. and after doing a trany rebuild on it myself i have just recently got the car running again. the car does not use the computer and so is not emmission tested. i do not know why it is blowing white smoke. it smells like fuel to me but i am not sure. i have given it a tune up recently new plugs, oil and some gaskets. If someone has any information it would be much appreciated. Thanks. graymarki 04-08-2005, 09:03 AM You have a bad or leaking Vacuum Modulator. Replace the modulator and drive the car for about 5 miles and it will stop smoking. When a modulator goes bad, transmission fluid is sucked into the exhaust system and hence the white smoke. It's embarassing driving it down the street with that white trail of smoke following you! inforcer958 04-12-2005, 11:36 PM Where is the vaccum modular? kelcamino 01-06-2006, 05:48 PM vaccum modulator is between the pan and bellhousing. It is connected to the vacuum hose to your intake. White smoke can be caused by coolant entering the cylinders too (blown head gasket). bobss396 01-09-2006, 07:31 AM Good call on the modulator. Once the diaphragm breaks, it sucks the tranny fluid up into the intake manifold and burns it. It will make an amazing smoke cloud and you will lose a lot of fluid fast, so don't drive it until it's fixed. Bob vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
