I plan to buy my daughter a used Beetle. I have been looking at the 1998 and 1999 models, which are generally within my budget ($7K). I am leaning toward a diesel and have found some in the price range. Before I go out to test drive, can anyone tell me what items (specific to beetles) I should pay particular attention to? I know how to inspect a used car in general, but often certain vehicles have a tendency toward certain problems. I thought some of you could share you insights with me.

Thanks,

The earlier were the more problematic. Diesels are pretty good. Make sure all the little electrical gadgets (as well as the larger ones) work & look for a good maintenance record if possible. Interior trim quality was an issue.

Also one more thing to look at is if it has more than 60,000 miles on it, make sure the timing belt was changed, if it wasnt, it is just a matter of time before it will break and you will have major engine damage.

I am in the market for one also because of the almost 50mpg it will get.

I know where there is a 98 for 7,900 with 91,000 miles on it, if you are close to Ohio.

Thanks everyone - I was able to find a 1998 diesel for $6900 and picked it up yesterday.
