We have a 1998 Beetle and it shifts at a high RPM ,1st to 2nd gear around 25-30 mph before it shifts and might be getting worse. Could it need fluid change? we just bought it used, 76000 miles, gas engine. It just seems to be winding out to high?

start with a fluid change with VW fluid at a dealer.

If that doesnt fix it then you might need a new transmission.

Thank you for your reply, I just drove the Bug (its my daughters car) and it shifted fine, the AM temp here is 40 and the car is outside, do you think that is a good sign as far as needing a new trans? the dealer said we were looking at 2500-3000 dollars for a replacement! OUCH! The info I gave earlier was word of mouth from wife and daughter so I think its probably an intermitent problem. If I can get her to give it up for awhile I will try to pinpoint the issue. We are nevertheless going to take it to a dealer to get it checked out, along with the other issues it has, Airbag light is on, speedometer is off at highway speeds, cruise control is real jerky. It seems the list could be more than the car is worth!

A faulty speedo gear will cause harsh shifting or limp mode where no overdrive is used. If your spedometer is not working I would say get a new VSS for the differential. Its pretty easy to replace and costs about 100 for the top and bottom piece.
