Car lopes and sometimes dies when stopped

Hey guys, I've seen some problems listed like the one Im about to describe, but this is driving me nuts!!!! My '95 Ford Escort GT is acting funny, morever at stop signs, red lights, and in traffic on the highway. The tachometer will stick around the 750 rpm mark (like its supposed to) and then dip down to 500 rpms and then sometimes, not always, dies on me, which i have to slam the shifter into neutral (its an automatic, unfortunately) and start the engine. As I leave a stop sign, red light, etc, the car will hesitate about 3 times before it runs with no problem. Im guessing its a vacuum leak, as I have recently (about 6 months ago) replaced spark plugs, wire set, cap and rotor, fuel filter, and installed a K & N drop in airfilter. My transmission acts up at times (not always) and wondered if maybe, just maybe, all this "hesitation" was due to the tranny going out, although I think thats highly unlikely. I have read about the IAC sticking, I've had people tell me my distributor is worn, but someone please give me a straight answer!

Try cleaning the IAC and the MAF sensor. The MAF sensor often gets clogged when running an oiled filter like K&N and when it gets dirty will cause problems like you stated. As for the IAC simply remove it, spray it with an electronics or carb cleaner allow to dry and replace. The MAF is a little toucher and you need to be very careful when cleaning. Use electronics or brake cleaner and spray the wires gently, don't use a lot of pressure. Allow it to dry and replace. Some folks say not to try to clean a MAF sensor but it can be done and often will cure the stalling problems you are experiencing.

Check the main air breather hose between the maf and engine for cracks / vacuum leaks. might be great idea to remove it for inspection.

I'll check my manual and get back to you. I don't have it with me at the present time.

What size engine do you have? The locations vary depending on the size of the engine.
