anyone wrestle the tank on a 78 mark v?? anyone sell new tanks?

Sure. Removal is pretty easy.
Make sure the tank is empty (siphon it if you have to. )
Remove the cas filler cap and unscrew the 3 or 4 little screws arouns the gas filler neck.
Then gently pull the gas filler pipe out of the car.
Use a floor jack and a block of wood to support the tank. Underneath the car you will see 2 long metal straps holding the tank up. They are supported by 2 long bolts at the front of the tank. Unscrew the nuts and lower the jack a few inches.
You can then reach the fuel lines and electrical wires. Unplug the wires. Likely you should replace the rubber fuel lines so at this time, just cut them off, then lower the tank to the ground.
Unless your tank has a massive dent or huge rust holes in it, it can be chemically cleaned and coated with a rust inhibitor/sealer. Your hometown may have a specialty gas tank shop. Otherwise, auto shops that repair auto radiators often do gas tanks too.
