What suv would you recommend for towing about 5500lbs? It needs to have four wheel drive, V8 and seat 5 adults. I would also like to be able to tow without any problems up hill and down. I’m looking at around a 1999 or 2000.
Tahoe
Expedition
Durango 5.2L or 5.9L

I like the Tahoe and/or Expedition choices. The Durango is a little cramped in the back seats. Also if you look any more for a Durango check out the 4.7, they have more power and better gas mileage.

5500 lbs is not a really big load. But will you be taking a full load of passengers and/or gear inside?
Manufacturer towing capacities don't always seem to allow for this. To be sure, I'd look for a vehicle rated for at least 7000-7500 lbs. Lots of vehicle/equipment combinations in this range. Happy hauling!

I second that.

Also, check this link, http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/mileage.htm and read about gearing halfway down the page. Tall gears (e.g., 4.10) are great for towing but gives poor fuel mileage. Short gears (e.g., 3.42) are great for fuel mileage but perform poorly for towing. Something in between (e.g., 3.73) might be best for your needs.

But, notice how diesel prices dont seem to budge?

I have a 4 door '97 Tahoe. It tows like a breeze! Lots of room inside. And right now with gas here at $1.11.. you can pretty much fill it up for $50 and run almost 300 miles on a tank!

Find a diesel 4x4 Excursion and your in business. My wifes tows anything I hook to it and gets up to 20 mpg when empty.

It's got 153K miles and runs perfect, no other SUV compares to it.

Damn I wish GM would smarten up and do a Duramax SUV. The Excursion Powerstroke is the hot setup, but it's still a Ford. :iceslolan
