this vehicle wouldn't start yesterday then all of a sudden it starts. when i went to turn the car off it wouldn't stop running i removed the key and the car was running. i put key back in car and put in drive and was able to turn it off only to have every dash light stay on with cooling fan runnig under hood .needless to say the battery drained down causing everything to finally die . anybody with any similar stories or opinions ! help thanks

My guess would be a bad ignition switch. R & R.

Oh yea I used to have a 90 Mazda 626 that did the same thing. All I did was pull out the engine fuse in the power distribution center under the hood and it would quit running. Its definately an electrical problem, and/ or you have hotspots in ur combustion chamber, causing fuel and air to be burned. Hot spots are caused by inefficient cooling. After I replaced my radiator in that car it never did continue to diesel (the continuous running of an engine while key is turned OFF). Go figure

It might be the switch like the 1st reply said...or what happened in my case was where the key goes into...there is a shaft that goes down to turn the switch..that' shaft broke inside and kept the car "ON". your situation is the exact same thing that happened to me..so, I would take off the plastic around the steering column and removed the switch(little black piece on the left side of the column that is a little bigger round then a quarter). U

se your key to try to turn the car on and off with that. if it doesn't work, thats your problem.

if it does work, then put your key in where you would normall start the car..put it in the "start" position and let it go. if to goes back to the "on" position, that's fine and its the switch..if not...the shaft broke on your car like it did mine.

What I did is just put the switch outside of the column putting it back together and just letting the switch hang there. Using the key to turn the car on/off and I still needed my key in the normal position to unlock the wheel. That's the 'cheap' repair.
