My wife’s 03 Malibu has only the 2 highest speeds. The dealer says the resister is bad ands needs replaced. He said it’s common] Where is the resister located and how do you replace it?
Thank you
Thank you

it's quite a job. It's behind the HVAC control pannel. I suggest getting a repair manual, because you do have to remove quite a bit. What's the mecanic quoting for the job? Mine hasn't worked for 4 years. Iv'e learned to live without it because the the resistor pack will again burn out on 1 and 2 speed. I'm also going to repace my fuel pump myself because I'm not going to pay someone $450.00 Till then, I'm carpooling.

John, Are you sure about this? To the best of my knowledge the 2003 is no different that the 1997 - 2002 when it comes to this resistor. It is actually not that difficult, and can be done for about $20 and an hour in the driveway. Plus, the newly designed (black not green) resistor is designed not to burn out as the OEM one did.

you are correct the 03 is no different than the previous years. and yes it took me about 30 minutes to replace this and the new resistor is beefier and has a better tolerance to the heat it produces. thank you.
now if i can just figure out what is wrong with my dodge van

Yeah, It's not that hard. It's located essentially under you glove box up towards the fire wall. There's a plast cover you have to remove (kick panel), then you can find the blower motor restistor block screwed in up near the HVAC blower. Not that hard at all. You just find it, unattach the wire harness, unscrew it, Replace.

Here's some more specific insturctions found in this forum.
You will need: 1/4" Socket set -or- a 3/8" set with a universal joint
1. Remove the plastic cover from the underside of the passenger dash held in by four bolts. Note how the two air ducts on the left and top are connected, and how the other plastic cover piece is connected to the piece you are removing. This is helpful when you go to reinstall it.
2. Slide the Control Module to the right and pull it down carefully. Push it to the right being careful not to damage the wires.
3. Remove the blower motor power cable located on the forward side of the blower near the firewall.
4. Remove the jumper cable link to the blower motor resistor located on the resistor near the forward side of the blower.
5. Remove the blower motor held in place with three 7mm (I believe) bolts. You mat not need to do this, but it helps give you some room to work. It will also let see the blower motor resistor before proceeding.
6. Remove the two 5.5 mm bolts that hold the green blower motor resistor.
7. Install the new resistor using the two retained bolts. The improved part will be longer than the original, and black not green.
8. Re-install the blower motor using the three retained bolts, if you removed it originally.
9. Re-connect the blower motor power, and the resistor jumper.
10. Test the blower fan settings prior to putting the dash back together.
11. Align and push the Control Module up into the slot and slide it back to the left.
12. Re-install the plastic cover using four retained bolts. This is where it helped to pay attention to the ducts and the other cover when removing.
I didn't write this so dont credit me. Thought you might find this usefull. Good Luck
