I have a friend who saw a street race where a 05 GTO smoked a 05 MR for at lease 3-car lengths back-to-back drag race. At first, the Evo gets a good jump but the 05 GTO suddenly catches up. They say they are equally matched but it seems 3 car lengths is quite a distance. Is this believable?

It's very believable. The Evo wins off the line because of AWD, shorter gearing, and a 500-pound weight advantage, but in terms of real-world acceleration, the GTO has it beat. Weight is less of a factor at high speeds, the GTO has less drivetrain loss, and it has taller gearing.

I think the '05 GTO will be cleaning up drag strips around the country this summer. That thing is basically just a 3600lb Corvette. Throw on some simple bolt on mods...intake, exhaust, slicks...and you're talking about a serious ass kicker in the 1320.

The race is totally believeable. The new GTO's have 400 horsepower. Despite the +400 pounds of weight, the GTO has a significant horsepower advantage. The race would've gotten ugly if they raced beyond the 1/4 mile.

I dont think 14.ohs and high 13s can run circles around 13.50s.

There was a video posted several months ago on here with an 04 GTO racing an 05 Mustang, and the Stang run 14.0x and the GTO went 13.5x I believe. Maybe it was a bad driver in the Stang, but the GTO had him pretty bad after half track.

In that same video, there was another 05 GT Mustang (different one) racing a Nissan 350Z, and it only ran 14.20s. Again, maybe those were just two bad drivers with two ill running Mustangs.

Even by comparing magazine times, the Mustang GT can't out run the 04 GTO.

And since you brought it up, the next GTO (if there is one) along with the next "Chevrolet Coupe" (maybe its a Camaro, maybe it'll be a Chevelle, or maybe it will be called Monte Carlo) will be built on the Zeta platform, not Sigma.

I've never driven an Evo, but I drove the '05 GTO a few weeks ago and I was very impressed by how fast it was (and it was an auto). The acceleration stats between the Evo and GTO are pretty close, but the longer the race goes on, the farther the gap will get with the GTO ahead (assuming equal drivers).

Haha it's funny you mention that...I am actually somewhat seriously considering selling my car and getting a '94 or '95 E420, I just love the old cheese brick shaped E class sedans...a trade-in with my maxima would mean I'd come pretty close to breaking even, given KBB prices.

Haha, that won't stop you for long. I agree though, the AMG wheels are beautiful. I say you put the rims on, smoke the tail lights, tint the windows, and cruise around the block reeeal slow!

haha, I'm not looking to pose as a drug dealer new guy....and the S-class is too beastly for me, it's like a yacht on wheels, I want something that will handle reasonably well...the E420 I was looking at on autotrader was green, less than 100k miles, and priced at $8,900...of course my dream would be to get an E500, but you can't get a good example of a '94 or '95 one of those for less than 20 grand used...guess you pay the extra premium for the fact that porsche had a hand in the E500...that and it has 40 more hp and 52 more ft/lb torque than the E420.

BS I do not think so, The all new GTO is pushing 400HP and 400 lb Torque. At the track last week when I was racing there was a GTO in the lane ahead of me the car next to GTO was a Subaru WRX Turbo. I remember saying to myself that the GTO is going to get waxed. Not so the Subaru beat the GTO off the line but at the end of the race the GTO tripped the lights @ 12.93 and the Subaru was 13.47. That is a half second faster... The GTO is super fast and really brings respect back to the Pontiac line. So I do not hink the EVO can beat it stock for stock with conditions and drivers being equal.

I know, I test drove one this weekend up in Tamarac, it was quick and yes I think It will walk a Evo and an STI. the odd part is that the automatics are actually .10 faster then the 6-speed in the 0-60. have you guys seen the appearence package on those? something like $3000.00 more. yipes!

Ford makes a Cobra rated 390 hp which is good for 420 hp on the dyno stock. And whould win stock against GTO with a mod. Secondly, my Mach 1 5sp slightly modded (did run 13.2 stock with practice) won against one GTO 400 hp. I don't know if my fender lead would have lasted past the 1/4 mile with that 400 horse power on tap.

Not to hate on the GTO, however most don't pull a high 12 in the 400 hp beast. Most pull a 13.4 to 13.1 in the 1/4. Yes, the GTO should win againt WRX STi's and EVO MR's (any EVO stock) with average driver.
