I have a 96 grand voyager with about 95000 miles. The other day, it started making a strange rattling noise when driving over 30 mph. It only happens when my foot is off the gas pedal and goes away if I rest my foot on the pedal. As the van is going faster, the sound gets louder and faster, almost like a rubbing noise on a wheel that would get louder as the wheel goes faster. You can even hear it slow as the van slows. If you put the van in neutral, it doesn't go away completely, but does get quieter. It is shifting fine and not acting strange at all except for this noise. I had it looked at by a mechanic who said it is the normal wear and tear of driving an older van. I don't believe him since it started so suddenly. If the van is stopped, the noise is completely gone, so I can't look to see where it is coming from. Any ideas?

Sounds like it has to be engine related if its still there at standstill . I would start looking at like the alternator , air conditioning compressor , is it on when this happens ? Also runs in defrost mode . Belt tensioner is also a suspect area , or it could be something like a loose heat shield on the catalytic converter .

Oh boy

I have a 97' grand voyager rallye 3.3 and had the same problem at 144,000 miles. I had a monkey mechanic drive it and was told it was the transmission. I took it to a "trusted mechanic" who drove it around the block and told me he knew what it was. After a couple hours he called me up to tell me that the flywheel was cracked. $450.00 later the vibrations and noises were gone. I don't know that you have the same problem but you may want to check that.

Oh Boy - watch the dates on the threads you're posting to. This thread is over a year old. Pretty good bet he's fixed it by now.
