ABS and Traction lights are on all the time

My ABS and Traction lights are on, and never go off (GP 1999 3.1 SE). It's been like this since i bought the car. Dealer who sold me the car must have removed leds from the dash board, so i didn't notice that there was something wrong when i was buying a car. After few days i knew something was wrong. I found leds were missing. I put them back on, and know they never go off. I don't want to take my car to the dealer and pay $$$$. What should i start with?? It's not fuse. I want to check speed sensors, but can somebody explain me exactly how to do this? I think steering is a little hard, but i get use to it. I did almost 30K milesc already, but i want to fix it at last. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the sensors may have failed. Will likely require replacing wheel hub assemblies.

Hello, we just bought a 97 GT. It has that exact thing going on (low trac and abs light always on) I`ve asked a hundred people, including repair shops. They all said the same thing, a sensor in the wheel hub, loose, dirty or loose wire or something. They have a diagnostic machine that`ll let them know right away. It sounds like a very simple problem for them to solve. I`ll take mine to a local Dobbs Tire place. Going to a dealer would be an overkill and costly. Also, I was told that same problem will cause both lights to come on. Let me know how it turns out.

I have a 2001 GTP with the same problem except mine go off and on.
The traction control actually shuts off and so do the anti lock brakes it is not the hub sensor it is the PCM seems the wiring comes loose and that is why it goes off and on.
The wheel sensor is sold as a complete unit with the HUB about 350.00 for the part from the dealer best thing to do is have the car scanned before you start changing parts.

I took my 99 GTP to a dealer because the TCS off light is always on as well as the ABS light. I spoke to the mechanic at the dealership and he told me it was the ABS control module or something like that throwing a code "CO550" if I remember correctly. Can anyone comment on this?? I didn't have them fix it because they charged me $750 in diagnostic time to fix a burnt wire going to my tranny causing it to stick in 3rd gear. Since the mechanic told me what was wrong I figured I could do it myself, but now everyone is telling me it sounds like a bad hub...not sure what to do, HELP!!!

Most problems of this nature are either the wheel sensor in the hub or a wiring problem to them. However, I have seen bad ABS motors and ABS Control modules. Not all ABS problems are the hub/wheel bearing. DTC error code C0550 is an ECU failure. I believe that its referring to the ECU in the ABS Control module.

Here are all the CHASSIS failure codes that a GP could generate with a proper scanner. The ABS braking system is part of the CHASSIS family of codes.

THANK YOU bnaylor3400!! I understand the ECU is bad since the dealer has confirmed this as well, but would you know where this part is located on the car by any chance, or maybe a part number so I can order a new one?? I'll probably try and find a used since money is a little tight right now. Thanks for the help

The problem is GM dealers are about the only ones that can properly scan a GM ABS braking system. They use a Tech 1 or 2 machine. The GP service manual recommends clearing all DTC error codes and confirming the error again before replacing any parts.

The proper name for the ABS control module is EBCM/EBTCM. Electronic Brake Control Module/Electronic Brake & Traction. Its located on the driver's side of the dashboard. Left of the instrument panel. Dash trim and panels have to be removed to get to it.

I'm not 100% sure but the GM part number should be 16268781. GM List $737. GMPARTSDIRECT.COM $420. If its confirmed bad, I'd try to get one at a salvage yard. BTW - The GTP model has its own specific control module. You cannot use one off of a GT or SE Grand Prix. The part numbers are different. Any way you look at it, its expensive and you might consider getting a second opinion from another dealer or shop that has ABS scan capability. Good luck!
