I've had this problem since I first got the truck, when I start it, it seems it runs real rich, I think that's the best way to describe it, it fumes REAL BAD for a minute or two. I always just thought that's the way it is, and it's a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thing. I'm in a sub-terranian garage now, and it is pretty bad for fuming the garage up, thought it time to ask for some advice.

The truck runs great, no problems, no codes. 60K v6 rodeo.

Any ideas?

thanks

I have the same. I think it is the nature of the truck. you should notice your tailpipe is nice and black.

I recently checked out a friend Xterra that had about 30k on it. The tail pipe was super clean.

My rodeo is the same, the exhaust smells real bad. It is tough to describe, but it makes me gag. It runs well so I figure it is fine. I asked the mechanic when I got the oil changed and he said it is normal.

Have 135k on my rodeo, tail pipe doesn't have a trace of black in it. However, every other Isuzu I've looked at appears to have a very black pipe. Including the 2000 Trooper I was recently looking at with only 58K miles - I was VERY surprized at how black that tail pipe was.

Why is that?

Why is that?

I think it has to do with the oil consumption. Mine is real black as well.

My 2002 (and SIL's 2003) 3.2's are the same. REAL rich for the first few minutes after a cold start. Like Ryan says, it's the nature of the beast. These engines smell like they run on the rich side most of the time. They'd probably melt down if they didn't.

No it isn't oil. Mine does the same 94 v6 with 133k and it doesn't burn oil at all. Something has to be wrong.
I'm thinking idle air control valve or cats.

Thanks all! I figured it was how the truck is supposed to be, but thought it worth asking. Gotta say, it is bad, I feel bad for the neighbors when they come in while I'm warming up, but what can we do? At least it's a consensus all is well, I just need to add an personal oxygen tank as a mod :grinno:

My 2000 does the exact same thing in cold weather. In fact a few weeks ago I was loading stuff into the back and my pants actually smelt like exhaust for a while. Its like a reall thick almost gas like smell but it goes away after it warms up a bit.

Dober, how about in warm weather? I get this in all weather. Most of the time here (in so cal) temps are pretty moderate, and I get it each cold start until it warms.

thanks

It might run a little richer than normal but I really only notice it in cold weather. I live in Toronto so it gets pretty cold some mornings.

Can anyone make sense of this, Dober seems to have a lesser problem than some of us? I know all cars fume when starting, my new MX-5 can put it out as well pretty good, but the Rodeo could kill someone when I warm it up.

I think it matters where you warm it up at. Outside, or inside a garage (of course with the door open).

I think the oil burning is due to the clogging of the piston ring oil clearance holes. I found that in my last two oil changes the oil burning was greatly reduced when I added half a can of seafoam in my gas tank and the other half in the engine, twenty minutes before changing my oil change. (You can buy Seafoam from Carquest in Canada)
I also have experimented with different brands of synthetic oil and found that here in Canada the Petro Canada full synthetic has only burned a quarter of a litre of oil in over a 1000 kilometers. At this rate of consumption I would burn a litre of oil after driving 2400 miles. Mind you it may not matter what oil I used after the Seafoam cleaned out my engine.
