marking on my timing cover?

I have a red X (http://hometown.aol.com/fordescortse2pt0/mark.jpg)on my timing cover cant tell if its chalk or marker any idea what this would be from?

added photo for you to see also noticed there is what looks like a white out mark also.

in the workshop i work in we mark the timing belt cover with a C and advice on service sheet that the belt needs changing to customer so next time its in we kno we advised (covering ya back is all loads a people asume T B is part of a general service )loads a garages do this !!!

Good idea i do that with a tune up i write with a chalk the mileage. also when repair lawn equipment i put date and hours when doing maintainace.

Any idea what the x would be?

How long have you owned the car? Alot of salvage yards mark items with a red or yellow X on recycled parts so they know if it came from them or not.

Hey Chevy,
My wife's cousin owns a 'recycle' yard (he doesn't like me calling it a junk yard) and he marks his 'junk' engines with a red 'X'. You haven't bought one from him have you?......just kidding :naughty:

That was my honest thought but I have no other indications to say otherwise (i have seen 3 marks on other junk motors) I was just curious if you knew what it could represent. I bought the car from a university teacher one owner no kids at 78k miles. They were up front about the car and even mailed me the owners manual after (they forgot to give it to me)
