In progress - Ski trip WRXwillimo 02-27-2005, 04:41 PM A really long term project I have going it a ski-trip diorama, that will center around a WRX. The diorama will have the WRX at a gas pump, being filled up, with two folks sitting inside, out of the cold. There will be considerable scratch work in the interior, and a scratchbuilt gas pump being operated by a Tamiya rally mechanic, and inside will be two heavily modified Hasagawa ski people and their gear. On the roof will be two snowboards and a pair of skis. Here is the WRX so far: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRXSnow06.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRXSnow07.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRXSnow08.jpg Still more snow (not much) and some ice to put on after I've finally mated the interior and the body shell. So I guess this makes progress thread #45 for me. Oh well. MidMazar 02-27-2005, 04:44 PM wow that looks so realistic, what did you use for the snow? blubaja 02-27-2005, 04:50 PM Hey, WOW!!! That snow looks sooo real!!! Cool project. Did you change the dash to lhd? Keep up the awsome progress!! Frank X. GTmike400 02-27-2005, 05:08 PM Looks awesome. Only problem I see is that there isnt snow in the background, so it makes for an unrealist diorama. Now you are going to paint that board rack...right? I'm diggin the snowboards. CamaroSSBoy346 02-27-2005, 05:46 PM thats going to look cool. bimbachetuning 02-27-2005, 05:50 PM Very realistic! More pics, please? tonioseven 02-27-2005, 06:15 PM :sunglasse freakray 02-27-2005, 06:18 PM About time we saw this ;) boostspike 02-27-2005, 06:40 PM nice... need to dirty up the wheels and tires.. :) ImolaEK 02-27-2005, 07:18 PM Awesome! :p SniperX13 02-27-2005, 07:30 PM looking great so far willemo, but remember, if the vehicle has already been driving in snow, its going to have lots of dirty slush built up in the wheel wells behind the tires. SupaMan89T 02-27-2005, 08:22 PM i remember this from awhile ago looks good man cant wait to see it finished! willimo 02-27-2005, 08:37 PM The snow I used is by a company called "Techstar." If you put that into google with "snow" you will find a couple places that sell it, but it is hard to find. It is better, but only marginally than the more available Woodland Scenics stuff. In retrospect, I would have rathered use Woodland Scenics because it is cheaper and you can get a lot of it, so I would have been able to dunk the car into the snow instead of sifting it on. Thanks for the tips about the slush behind the wheels and making the wheels dirty, but don't worry! The behind-the-wheel slush is very important and I haven't missed them! If you notice, the interior is not in, I wanted to do the interior after I decided that the body was ok. No point in doing all that interior work and scratch the project on account of not being able to make the snow look realistic. I plan on doing the slush, and weathering the wheels after putting it all together. I've just done the body so far. And yes, this dash is the one I used in the RHD -> LHD tutorial. blubaja 02-27-2005, 10:14 PM Hey, I hadn't noticed the lack of interior. But cool. If you are planning on making this a stock usdm wrx, you should get the hoodscoop from the rall kit. It is the wrx scoop. The one in the road car kit is for the STi. Keep up the goodness Will. Frank X. mach1_2003 02-27-2005, 11:05 PM that looks fantastic so far, great progress and the snow is very realistic. Awesome project!! Alfa 147 02-28-2005, 12:16 AM the snow look's so real, just awesome rx7king 02-28-2005, 12:25 AM awesome!! very original Jay! 02-28-2005, 04:33 AM Ski trip!! W00kt!! ZoomZoomMX-5 02-28-2005, 11:03 AM That's killer :smokin: ! Can't wait to see it finished and slushed-up. Maybe make one of the snowboards a bit wracked up and show a pair of crutches in the back seat w/one dude wearing a cast! GvEman 02-28-2005, 11:17 AM Looks sweet! Bas Carwash 02-28-2005, 12:44 PM Amazing stuff willimo. Keep us posted on this one! Porsche Carrera 02-28-2005, 02:46 PM awesome! DJPaul 02-28-2005, 04:04 PM outstanding work! ThatRoundHeadedKid 02-28-2005, 04:12 PM where'd you get such stuff, like the decals for the WP sticker, and the colorado license plate, and the rack. It's amazing! I'd also like to know how you did the salt and sand color on the paint. who makes the WRX btw? willimo 02-28-2005, 05:26 PM WRX = Tamiya. Ski rack, the horizontal bit at least = Aoshima S-parts Prelude. The vertical part that holds the snowboards is scratch. Winter Park decal = custom printed by a buddy. Plates = printed out on photo paper with my freakin' sweet new printer. Snowboards = scratch (check the how-to depository). The salt and sand color was pretty simple, I mixed some Tamiya Khaki (XF-49) with a little bit of White (X-2) and less Sky Gray (XF-19). I didn't measure, I just mixed till it looked right, but it was probably 10:2:1. The result is pretty gross. Then I sprayed it with low air pressure, from a good distance, probably double my normal airbrush to model distance, and made very quick passes to avoid fast build up. I had to be careful not to overdo it, but I think I did anyway. Someone once said about weathering "Work 'till you think you need one more coat, then stop." That's what I did. robrex 02-28-2005, 05:33 PM I can't wait to see the diorama! willimo 03-06-2005, 08:46 PM Busy weekend, have been working on the interior a lot. I used my airbrush for the interior (something I tried on the Fit for the first time) and I have to say, airbrush on interior = the greatest thing in the freakin world! The mask lines are perfect because of the low pressure and paint, plus, I can make all sorts of colors for contrast. I know you WRX folks are gonna fuss me because that blue seat inserts are way blue, but, I wanted contrast. I would have liked the gray plastic to be lighter, too, for even greater contrast to the black seats. But we can't win them all. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRX09.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRX10.jpg Started work on the interior details, too. The duffle is three thick peices of styrene laminated on each other, and then covered in putty to make the shape. I used a narrow screwdriver to make the place for the straps, then made the straps out of masking tape I cut to width. The ski boots are cut off one of the girls from the Hasagawa Ski People set. The goggles are from the same set, and the "bottle" is from the Tamiya Rally Mechanic set. The man for the front seat is a rally machanic that I modified to fit in the seat, cutting his knees so his legs could be straighter, and reshaping where his legs mount together and to the torso. His arm is out because he will be changing the CD in the car radio. The girl is parts from my Preiser 1:24 Eve set, using the head from the Cusco girl because I liked the hair better. She will have a Colorado State Univ. T-shirt and jeans that I will have to make of putty. I might steal legs from a rally mechanic yet to make that easier. I will definately steal shoes from one for her, poor girl ain't got no feet. How she gonna ski?!?! Then I include a pic of how about they are all gonna fit inside. The girl will be holding the bottle. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRX11b.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRX12b.jpg SchuberT 03-06-2005, 09:09 PM Gah, you always have a naked chick in the back seat don't you? LOL, looking good so far Willimo, keep it up. ThatRoundHeadedKid 03-06-2005, 09:31 PM I really need lessons on how to do this shit lol. I bet this will look unbelievable at the end. Why not give us a proper introduction? ;) freakmech 03-07-2005, 06:28 PM awesome project! but im curious about the inspiration. it doesnt snow here in Louisiana. are you from out of state? just curious! this is going to be very cool. :naughty: SniperX13 03-07-2005, 06:34 PM I see you modified the picts a bit :grinno: I'm really looking forward to seeing this completed. ImolaEK 03-07-2005, 06:59 PM The girl is parts from my Preiser 1:24 Eve set, using the head from the Cusco girl because I liked the hair better. She will have a Colorado State Univ. I'm looking forword for more progress :) GvEman 03-08-2005, 03:21 AM That looks Awesome dude!!! willimo 03-08-2005, 01:41 PM awesome project! but im curious about the inspiration. it doesnt snow here in Louisiana. are you from out of state? just curious! this is going to be very cool. :naughty: No, I've always been from Baton Rouge. However, in the past couple years I have been making many trips to the great white north, Colorado a bit and Boston a lot more. Being from Louisiana, snow on stuff looks very different and amazing, and seeing it stuck on cars was really bizarre to me, that's my inspiration. But, to all you northern folks, to ya'll a snowy car is about as interesting as a wet one probably is to us! Thanks for all the words, all, the hard part will be modifying people. I only wish you could see into the car better, it would be more worth while. slk320 03-08-2005, 03:12 PM Hey Will, why doe sit say "Banned" under your title? willimo 03-08-2005, 03:14 PM 'Cause I'm a rebel. willimo 04-10-2005, 06:37 PM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v417/willimo/WRX13.jpg Ski rack 95% done. I need straps for the boards, and I need to decal the skis so they don't look so... wrong. I don't know how I plan to do the skis, though.
