I have a 1993 325is that has a rattle in 3rd 4th and 5th gear when I get it up to 3000 rpm. It will also happen if I put the car in netural. I can feel it in the stick shift. The car has 259,000 miles on her and stills runs strong.

My 1995 318iS had the same problem. here's what I did: pry up the shifter boot, and lift it up over the shifter. You'll see a place where like (trying to visualize this.. was a couple years ago!) the boot is folded under and tied to the shifter handle. Take a zip strip (God bless 'em) and zip it as hard as you possibly can to this area (pliers help) and then cut off the excess. What I DO remember for sure is that when you fold the shifter boot back down and snap it back into place, you should be able to see just a tiny bit of an outline of the zip strip DIRECTLY below the shifter handle.

My buddy had the same problem in his E30 M3, and this solved the problem in both cases.
