View Full Version : You ever run out of gas ? You ever run out of gas ? dugie6551 02-16-2005, 03:17 PM I was a little annoyed cause I was such a dumbass !!! :banghead: ghostrx7 02-16-2005, 03:19 PM my first car had a broken gas gauge and i used to run out of gas often. sucks! had to call my mom to bring me gas! Raz_Kaz 02-16-2005, 03:19 PM LOL, never have... SeXy_AnGeL 02-16-2005, 03:20 PM I've never run out of gas but I sure do hate to pump it...ugh I can't pump gas '97ventureowner 02-16-2005, 03:24 PM I got AAA which has come in handy at least once for running out of gas. The sending unit in the tank of our Venture is messed up so once the fuel level falls below 1/2 the needle automatically goes to Full. TexasF355F1 02-16-2005, 03:25 PM I rarely let the gauge drop past 1/4 of a tank. 2strokebloke 02-16-2005, 03:27 PM I've run out of gas so many times I can't even remember how often it's happened. In the Toyota, you could run with the needle on E all day long - but I'd sometimes forget if the needle had gotten there yesterday, or the day before... In the Le Car, the very moment the gauge registered empty - your tank was empty. I'd usually end up stalling about 20ft or so from any gas station I was heading to. So far in the subaru I've only run out of gas once - about five miles from any gas station, at 11:30 at night, during the winter - and the only person who gave me a ride to the gas station was a motorcyclist, so I froze my ass off. crayzayjay 02-16-2005, 03:41 PM Never have, never will. chacal 02-16-2005, 03:57 PM Never have. Never have, never will. I wouldn't say that... Man, we'll ROTFL if some day you say "I've ran out of gas..." :lol2: WickedNYCowboy 02-16-2005, 04:00 PM I've never ran out of gas. But my friend matt used to do it weekly when he had the 86 Cut. crayzayjay 02-16-2005, 04:10 PM I wouldn't say that... Man, we'll ROTFL if some day you say "I've ran out of gas..." :lol2: I will NEVER run out of gas. Ever. Unless a gauge goes wrong :grinno: ghostrx7 02-16-2005, 04:15 PM i forgot to mention that now i get a company car with freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee gasssssssssssss!!!!!!guess ill never run out again!!!!!! dugie6551 02-16-2005, 04:27 PM i forgot to mention that now i get a company car with freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee gasssssssssssss!!!!!!guess ill never run out again!!!!!! Until you forget to fill it ... :screwy: eversio11 02-16-2005, 04:28 PM I rarely let the gauge drop past 1/4 of a tank. Same here, can't stand having a tank not full. Hell, if the tank is only half full and gas is cheap at the time, I'll fill up. It's a trait I picked up from delivering pizza, every night I would take some of my tip money and fill the tank full. I've grown to not being able to stand a tank that isn't full all the time. tman 02-16-2005, 04:39 PM Gas, I don't need gas. My car runs on solar power. Not really. The Buick begins to sputter under gentle braking at 1/4 tank, so I kind of need to keep it full. clawhammer 02-16-2005, 05:01 PM Never ran out either. Closest I came to is the car stalled twice, but started up each time. As soon as it did that, I just drove straight to a gas station. imtheoneandonlyD 02-16-2005, 05:04 PM never have.....yet. Almost did when i had my grandam. The car kept cutting out, barely made it to work and to the gas station after. chevydrummer76 02-16-2005, 05:08 PM nope haven't run out yet.....16 gallon tank and my biggest fill up I've had was 15.5. So 1/2 gallon is the lowest its gone. SniperX13 02-16-2005, 05:13 PM Nope, I rarely, if ever, let my car go below 1/4 tank of gas. never had the gas light come on, or anything close to making it come on. I usually tank up right when the needle is between 1/2 and a 1/4. alfonso2501 02-16-2005, 05:55 PM The only time I ever ran out of gas was the first week I bought my present car. Unlike most of you guys I have a habit of letting the needle run right on E before I even think about going to gas station (you know the old E is enough and F means flooded joke). Anyway, I’m going over the Verazano Bridge from Brooklyn to Staten Island too my GF’s house, the low fuel light is practicality screaming @ me, and I’m thinking it’s like my old car where I could get it passed E into the red zone before it even starts to stutter, & I’m more worried about getting to my GF’s house late. I get to her house and her father is sitting on the steps reading the paper. He walks over & I start showing him my new car. He asks me if he could take it for a spin. I throw him the keys we both get in, he turns the keys & it clicks! He does it again & the same thing. He turns to me & says “Don’t look at me, I didn’t do nothing!” We both laugh and walk to the gas station with an empty Arizona ice tea bottle. Long I know, but I had to share that with you! -Davo 02-16-2005, 06:16 PM My pettie light has come on a few times. clawhammer 02-16-2005, 06:17 PM You do get better gas mileage when it's close to empty, that gas weighs a lot Menu dei Motori 02-16-2005, 06:35 PM never :p chacal 02-16-2005, 08:52 PM You do get better gas mileage when it's close to empty, that gas weighs a lot How BIG is your tank? clawhammer 02-16-2005, 09:32 PM How BIG is your tank? 10 pounds of gas weighs 85 pounds. Colov99 02-16-2005, 09:53 PM 10 pounds of gas weighs 85 pounds. I hope you mean gallons... cause otherwise..... I see a problem. And no Ive never run out of gas, never let my car get below 1/2 a tank. at even 1/2 a tank it has trouble starting.... tman 02-16-2005, 10:06 PM I have an 18 gallon tank. About every 200 pounds kills gas milage by 1mpg(this is an estimate, every car is different) If that's true, then I'm only losing one mile of distance per tank by keeping a full tank, a small price to pay for safety. ThatRoundHeadedKid 02-16-2005, 10:32 PM I think my mom's TL '03 has a small tank, 13 or 16 gallons or something like that......... BTW, my dad is horrible at gas fills. His 745i's VANOs and fuel pump didn't take kindly to the sludge at the bottom of the tank.....and that happend 3-5 times. clawhammer 02-16-2005, 11:02 PM I hope you mean gallons... cause otherwise..... I see a problem. And no Ive never run out of gas, never let my car get below 1/2 a tank. at even 1/2 a tank it has trouble starting.... Yeah, sorry, I meant gallons. Robs71Nova 02-16-2005, 11:14 PM When I first did the bigblock swap into my 71 Nova the gas gauge wasn't working. I went to the gas station and filled the car up (13 gallon tank) I clocked it off on the odometer and I had went EXACTLY 85 miles when the car stalled out on me. I thought to myself "There is no damn way my gas mileage is this bad, I CAN'T be out of gas already." But infact, I had ran out of gas, getting a WHOPPING 6.5 miles per gallon... Ya those were the days (this happend 4 months ago). Rob MBTN 02-16-2005, 11:27 PM When my car is down to around 1/4 tank and I make a hard enough left, It'll starve for fuel. Scared my shitless the first time it happened as I was... ahem... doing some spirited driving. ;) ghostguy6 02-17-2005, 09:25 AM Gas, I don't need gas. My car runs on solar power. Not really. The Buick begins to sputter under gentle braking at 1/4 tank, so I kind of need to keep it full. Same with mine, and when its really cold out I need to keep it at almost 1/2 a tank or it wont idle properly :screwy: Ive only ever run out of gas in the lawn mower, that things a fucking gas hog HogieGT-R 02-17-2005, 09:49 AM B12 (my old sentra) didn't have a working fuel gauge, so we measured it by the trip odometer....every 180 miles, we'd fill it up....never failed the dummy light has only come on once, but other than that i keep my tank full dugie6551 02-17-2005, 11:26 AM When I first did the bigblock swap into my 71 Nova the gas gauge wasn't working. The level sender must be busted in the tank :( My car takes 18.5 gallons though. Yikes. RickwithaTbird 02-17-2005, 08:46 PM maybe the light is burnt out. and about the nova... you miscalculated the gas mileage. Its actually 6.53846154 miles per gallon. Just so you know. :grinno: jk speediva 02-17-2005, 09:00 PM I only ran out of gas once... on my bike... damn thing didn't have a gas gauge. I now use the trip to keep track of fueling concerns. The car RARELY goes below 1/4 tank. SiGNAL748 02-17-2005, 09:24 PM I fill up at 1/8th tank. Robs71Nova 02-17-2005, 11:23 PM "No replacement for displacement !!!" This happened when everything was out of tune, when I had JUST got the swap done. Now after having the carb tuned properly to suit the new intake, im getting ALMOST 10 MPG. Not too bad for a car that is pushing slightly over 500 horsepower.. Rob Polygon 02-18-2005, 12:01 AM Nope, I've never run out of gas. Doing that can be bad for your injectors anyhow. ec437 02-18-2005, 01:20 AM seeing as how I'm a poor high school student driving my parent's gas hoggin V8 lexus, I rarely put gas in unless the little orange light comes on at me. The farthest I've ever had to go with the orange light on is 45-ish miles. I was really not wanting to run out of gas on that one; I had forgotten my cell phone at home  BTW, MTBN, you think 18 gallons is bad? try 23. :eek7: KaotiKCamaro5 02-18-2005, 03:57 AM ran out of gas one time going to school, i was already running late and i figured i had enough to get there and home (i only live 3 miles away) but i figured wrong, ended up missing class and my dad was pissed because he had to bring me gas. dugie6551 02-18-2005, 10:24 AM This happened when everything was out of tune, when I had JUST got the swap done. Now after having the carb tuned properly to suit the new intake, im getting ALMOST 10 MPG. Not too bad for a car that is pushing slightly over 500 horsepower.. Rob Does that mean you can "skip" a gas station when out for a tour? Or do you still have to stop at "every" gas station? (Been there, done that !!!) S10 truck + 350 motor + heavy right foot = getting to know every gas station cashier by name!!! Ridenour 02-18-2005, 10:30 AM I've never run out of gas. I always keep mine no lower then 1/8th tank. But my fuel light comes on at like 20 miles left I think, so I really could afford to run it down a lot lower. I'm just worried about sediments and shit getting sucked in. Andydg 02-18-2005, 10:40 AM I've run out of gas like 5 times...Once in my dad's truck going into town to get gas it ran out by the high school and I coasted into town and pulled into the gas station only to realize I was on the wrong side of the pump, that was pretty embarassing. The other 4 times were on my dirt bike out on gravel roads on my way home from riding all day. 3 times I stalled in front of someone house and I just asked them if I could have some gas and since they're all farmers they got the huge tanks out by their barns that only cost like $.95 a gallon. But he other 2 times I was litterally in the middle of nowhere but I had a cell phone and just called my buddies and they brought me some gas. fredjacksonsan 02-18-2005, 12:17 PM Driving a car from Virginia to Colorado, gas gauge broken. My brother and I were stopping every 200 miles to fill up. Middle of Kansas. He's sleeping. I start letting off the gas like we're running out. He wakes up, sees where we are and freaks. I tell him "just kidding" and motor on. He's back to sleep, 20 minutes later when the car jerks for real like it's running out of gas. He wakes up again, gives me a dirty look. I tell him that I'm not doing it. We swerve back and forth, trying to get some gas to slosh into the bottom of the tank. We're 1 mile from the exit that we had planned to stop at, pull up to the stop sign behind a pickup that's more rust than anything else. How long can the gas last? We can see the gas station just on the other side of the exit. The two (very very) old guys wait in their pickup for at least 2 minutes while several gaps in traffic pass by. We're sitting on eggshells when they finally move from the stop sign, cross the road and the car quits and rolls up to the pump. We put 12.3 gallons in a 12 gallon tank. :D Related Links Participate in thousands of discussions at AutomotiveForums.com! Registration is absolutely free. |
