'96 Sable power window problem

The power windows on my Sable recently stopped working. They will not go down from the drivers door control or any of the individual door controls. The manual does not mention a specific fuse that controls the power windows that I can see. Also, perhaps related, my dome lights and door lights are also out although I still have power lock control and side mirror control. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem?

Start with a wiring diagram and a test light and see if you are getting power to the switches.
I have made enlarged copies of the wiring diagrams for my cars. This makes it easier to read and trace the circuits. I have also used colored markers to highlight and mark off circuits as I have checked them.
By tracing the circuits, you will find out where the power originates. If you have power, then check the grounds.

My girlfriends sable has similar problems but only the rear driver window won't go down. And when the doors are closed sometimes the dash light and dome light will stay on constantly or will go off after about a minute delay. Anyone have suggestions for this problem open for suggestions.

th30n3th3ym1ss3d- start with the window motor and work back. See if you are getting power to the window motor. Test the motor. With the motor out does the window go up and down easily.
Use a wiring diagram to to trace the electrical circuit and test each part. Be patient and methodical.

KimMG- Thank you for the reply I know what steps to take just haven't had time to get to it so if anyone knew something that they had the same thing and found the problem I could look specifically instead of starting from scratch thank you for the reply though.

Very, very strange. My daughters '96 Sable is doing the same thing, rear drivers won't work and interior lights issue.

I haven't investigated it yet because it's such a pain in the @ss to get the door panels off. Does anyone have a source to replace the christmas trees? The local auto parts stores don't carry a good selection of Ford door panel hardware.

I do notice that the lights will dim slightly  when the switch is activated. This makes me belief it's a motor problem, probably froze up.

5not4-The last time I needed door panel hardware, I ordered it from the dealer. It wasn't that expensive and the parts guy mailed me the clips.

KimMG, thanks for the suggestion.

I guess your first thought is the parts store before the dealer. I kind of figured I would end up there at the end, anyhow.

The window on the passenger door would not work from any control. I chased it down to a bad contact in the button on that door they are designed with a type of backfeed circuitry that can be tempermental if not making proper contact. I was able to make it work by taking the switch apart and flexing the contact springs to increase there tension.

Have you found a solution to this problem? Mine just did that.....I think it might be a relay ...but I am not sure

LOL , Im having the same problem on my 99. The Drivers door is the only window that will not go down. Though the dome light has never been flaky, but recently its been spazzing out. I think it just might be the switch though, cause it always works. I might just have to tap it or flip it back and it works. Other than that, I have no other problems. Hmmmm. . .

I've got a similar problem in my '01 Sable.... Started off that one morning when I unlocked the car with the remote, the dome light didn't come on. I got in and tried to turn it on with the dash switch but nothing happened. I checked the map lights and they were dead as well. By the time I got to work they were working. Started off this problem was very sparatic, but recently it's getting more common... about every other morning or so.

I have isolated the cause to somewhere in the driver's side kick/dash area. What I did was on morning when they didn't come on using the remote, when I got in I turned on the driver's map light before I took off. After a block or two (radio and AC off to minimize noise) I heard a click from the lower left dash area and the light came on.

This past Sunday morning when we got in the car for church, again the dome didn't come on. Since the sun had been up for a few hours the interior was pretty warm so I tried to lower the windows to help the AC cool things off but none of them worked. Again after a block or so, the dome kicked on and the windows also started working. It's happend again a couple more times this week.

My question is where the "body controller" location or is there another electrical controller located in the kick panel/LH dash area?

Any suggestion greatly appreciated!!!

JOE
