Today I had an idea. Instead of buying random good looking kits, I thought I should have a goal to aim for. So I decided that I will buy and build all the available 1/20 and 1/12 scale cars that ran in 1982 Formula 1 championship. Why 1982 you ask? Well, it's my year of birth :)
One of those cars is the Ferrari 126C2. I know that Revell AG reboxed Protar's kit, but I ran a search and couldn't find any good info on it.
So here I am asking for a little help. How is the quality (or lack of) of this kit? I found a couple on ebay.de @ €30 + shipping. Is it worth it?

On another note, yesterday I went to a model shop in another city and found a 1/8 Ferrari 643, by Rosso. They are asking €1500 ~ US$1900. I've been told it's a very rare kit, and quite good. Not up to today's standards, but good. The selling price when it originally came out was around US$500, so 4x the price, even for a rarity, seems pretty high.
I asked the guy to open the box, and I was shocked by the size of that thing. It's HUGE, and it's beautifully prepainted cowling is brilliant!

To be honest, I've never heard about Rosso kits before. I don't know if it is a fair price or it's just a rip-off.
What is your opinion about this?

Regards,
Pedro.

Good idea on the year of your birth. Hmm, how many kits are there of F1 cars that raced in 1967?

Great idea Pedro, good luck.

As far as I know there were two versions of that Rosso 1/8 scale Ferrari 643, one was more limited than the other, I think it came with some extra detailing parts. Anyway, I know one place online that you can still buy both versions and the rarer one there is $1600 US and that seller is generally higher priced than eBay. I would say $1900 is over the top personally, it is a very very rare and nice model though.

Nice idea Pedro. I have the Protar 126C2 kit and it looks fairly decent in the box. Have no idea about fitment issues. What other kits are there from 1982?

I seem to recall that the Rosso 643 came as a basic kit as well as an extra add on detail set? :dunno:

There is only one car that counts from 1967 Rob, the mighty Lotus 49! :)

I'm quite sad that there aren't many models available in 1/20+ scale. I find 1/43rd way too small..
But even so, these few sum up to about €560~US$700...

Does someone know if any of the others are available?

I built a 1/24th scale Ferrari 126C2 years ago (somewhere in the parents house!) - can't remember the maker but it may have been Protar, anyone else remember this kit? I seem to remember it went together pretty well.
Have the Revell (ne Protar) 1/12th C2 in the "To Do" pile. It's my favourite ever Formula 1 car, driven by the greatest ever (IMHO) driver: Gilles. Looks quite a good kit, there's a good build-up here:

but you have to pay...
