Front Differential

Just purchesed this 2000 XJ 4x4 about 3 or 4 months ago. I have noticed that there is a line coming off the top of the front differential, that routes back towards the rear of the jeep, in that processs it goes over the shaft that goes into the front differential. It has been rubbed almost completely apart, a huge split in it. Noticed that there is some silver tape on this line (not duct tape). I have no idea what this (around 1'') line is. I havent used the 4 wheel drive because of this. But we may be getting snow soon. Any ideas on this? Thanks in advance for any responses to this post.

That is the vent tube for the front diff. They make it long enough to stay above water and prevent water contamination. It should attach high in the engine compartment. Some models have it attaching to the air box on the engine intake (air cleaner).
Should probably replace it with a new long piece of rubber hose.
If the vent/vent hose plugs on a diff, the seals will start leaking. Could be at the axle seals or at the pinion seal.

Thats a relief. So i can use my 4 wheel drive as is? Just not in high water or mud etc.. I dont think theres a big risk of it plugging because its only about a foot away from the differential itself. And its prety much splayed open. Thanks again for the quick response.
