2.4L = Crappy Motorgreatnorth01 03-17-2002, 10:53 PM Anyone have problems wtih the 2.4L burning about a litre of oil between oil changes? greatnorth01 03-17-2002, 11:04 PM Own a '99 Cav Z24, 2.5" exhaust, Dynomax Super Turbo at the back with NO catalyitc Converter (kept the resonator on though). Basically, had the car for 3 years now (bought it brand new) and have been told by friends that during hard acceleration it is stinking like it's burning oil (though there is no obvious blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe). The car just turned 110,000km a few weeks ago... running premium fuel all the time and have been using Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil since the second oil change. The car has not been mis-treated, and I'm begining to wonder why GM has dropped this motor for the lotus designed 2.2L Ecotec engine in the new 2002's. So before I run out and trade this car off on a '02 Nissan Sentra Spec-R V (with a lot more power and toys for the same cost), I'd like to hear from others in regards to if they have heard of someone having the same problem or if they themselves have had the same problem. I really really liked the car (my previous was a 98 sunfire GT) , but having had mechanical troubles with both models, I've lost a lot of faith in the north american car companies. Ironmike215 03-28-2002, 08:32 PM I have a friend who used to have the 2.4, and yes, his did burn oil, but not that much. have you done anything as far as investigation as to how all that oil is being burned? greatnorth01 03-29-2002, 11:46 AM It's burning about a litre of oil (not sure what the imperial measurement is....a quart?). Some mechanics that I have talked said that a properly broken - in engine will burn oil between oil changes....but 1 litre sounds a little high to me. This is only my second vehicle though (traded the 98 sunfire GT off on this one) and I never put as many km's on the Sunfire as compared to the Cavie. Ironmike215 03-29-2002, 05:32 PM well the only other thing i can say is that i know that some 95 saturns had an engine that burned that much oil (1 quart every 1000 miles) and they still passed emissions somehow. Unfortunetly, i also dont think they have a rhyme or reason for doing so... teeboricus 04-08-2002, 04:19 PM unless you have put a super chip in your car you are wasting your money on premium gas - but who cares its only money right? Ironmike215 04-08-2002, 04:30 PM more or less...lol z24_cavi_man 12-06-2003, 07:06 PM from what i heard and experience the 2.4 isd a bad motor and does burn alot of oil. rocketman2005 01-01-2004, 11:22 AM I have a 2001 z24 with a 2.4 in it with 50,000 miles and have had no problems what so ever with oil. I've gone 5,000 miles before oil changes and its still clean and hasn't used a drop of oil. I drive my car pretty hard too, so its not like i'm babying it. ccRileyrider 01-02-2004, 11:09 PM I have a 98 W/ the 2.4L and other than having to replace the water pump and that being a biiieeecth. I love the motor, do not run it real hard though. I have 118,000 miles and still runs like new. CC urweak 01-02-2004, 11:20 PM unless you have put a super chip in your car you are wasting your money on premium gas - but who cares its only money right? Well if you want to talk about waste of money, a super chip is just that, a waste of money. C_Sephiroth 01-09-2004, 09:02 PM Well there are 2 pints in a quart, dont know how many pints in a litre, is it 3, if so you are using about a quart of oil between your oil changes. 1 question how long is you time between oil changes? In regards to the person who said premium was a waste of money, I have a 2.3L H.O. engine and have to Run premium, because the compression is so high. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
