Insight needed or wiring diagram for a 96 Ford Explorer, 4 door XLT with 96,000 miles. No power seats.

Intermitently:

1. all interior lights do not work at all, when door opens or if panel rheostat is used or attempted to switch on manually at dome

2. all power windows do not work

3. front and rear wipers do not work. Front washer motor does not work, BUT REAR washer motor works.

Radio, headlights, dash lights/gauges, turn signals, heater/blower, AC all work fine, no problem.

After heavy rains in California, water leaked in through firewall speedometer rubber plug/gasket that was off, where alarm wire to siren in engine compartment runs. Aftermarket alarm system spliced into wiring harness on left side by parking brake.

I have pulled up and dried out the wet padding and carpet on drivers side as well as replaced the firewall speedometer rubber plug and re-routed the alarm siren wire.

Aftermarket alarm system brain/module, disconnected, but it's wiring loom is still spliced into the truck wiring harness.

Under the hood, I have checked all fuses on interior driver's side panel, plus all fuses/fusible links under hood in Power Distribution Box on drivers side.

I have cleaned/checked the grounds of the new battery, checked the battery(at 12.99 volts, engine not running, 14.5 volts with engine running, no drops in voltage when accessories/headlights switched on) and alternator output,(at 14.5 volts) cleaned all fuses/relays/fusible links which all seem to be OK. I swapped all relays, especially the interior ones up under the dash that control interior lighting, and still no change etc.

Could this be a bad GEM? Do they go bad at a certain point?

Any ideas? My next option is to remove the aftermarket alarm system from the wiring harness. Any insight/help would be appreciated. Plus if I replace the aftermarket alarm with a new one, what is the best alarm system to use with this Explorer?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like the GEM is involved somewhere. If you're sure everything is dry, Disconnect battery for 10 minutes. Reconnect. Sometimes that will reestablish communication with the PCM. Worth a try.

Thank you for the quick reply. Everything is now dry. I put a hair dryer on the wires and redid all the splices from the alarm harness into the truck harness and sealed them with silicone.

I will try the 10 minutes battery disconnect tonight.

If that does not work, I will remove the alarm harness from the truck harness and see if all systems that are out come back up, after again disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes.

If that does not work, I will next try replacing the GEM. Would you know where the GEM is located on this 96 Explorer?

Thanks again.

To the left of steering wheel under the dash. In the vicinity of the fuse panel.

Thanks. :-)

I will look there. And I will post the final results after this weekend of diagnosis.
