Seatbelt Tension 1998 Camry LEcdlubbe 02-06-2005, 09:45 PM HellO I have a 1998 Camry Le with 100,000 miles on it. I have noticed that the return tension on the front seat belts are not even close to the rear seat belts. Not that I want the belts pulling super tight on me when driving, but I would like them to retract on their own.You almost have to feed them back into the housing so I do not get tangled up in them or they hang outside of the doors when shutting the doors. Is this normal for this year Camry? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards...Chuck Mike Gerber 02-07-2005, 02:36 PM Chuck, I had this same problem on my wife's 98 with the driver's side shortly before the 3 year warranty was up. The dealer replaced the whole assembly under warranty. Now, about 4 years later and at 78,000 miles I notice it's a little weak again. It must be the nature of the beast. I think the only remedy is to replace the whole assembly again so I am waiting until it gets really bad. I don't think you can buy just the spring or some other part of the assembly; I guess it opens up too much liability for Toyota that way. Mike cdlubbe 02-07-2005, 02:39 PM Hello Mike:Thanks for the information.Do you know if Toyota will replace them for free still? The car is way out of warranty. Mike Mike Gerber 02-07-2005, 02:53 PM Chuck, I really don't know about that. I think it is only part of the 3 year/36,000 miles warranty. You could try calling Toyota customer service in California at 1-800-331-4331 and ask them directly. If you ask a dealer they will almost certainly say no.
