1989 Accord LX-i winter problems

I've had my car since 2001. I don't have any problmes starting it in the winter. But when I go to put it in park I am not able to ge the key out.

The only thing related to this seems to be the light around the P (park - I have an AT) on the tree of gears does not light up. And until it lights up I cannot take the key out of the ignition. It may take up to 5 mins until the light shows up.

Could this be a bad sensor or connection. I have taken it to many different places and no one has been able to help.

You have a dirty shifter position switch. It is located on the center console to the left of the shifter handle. Remove the center console and you will see the switch. The business end is a slider which is hooked to the shifter. The switch can be disassembled in place and the contacts cleaned on the slider and switch body. and reassembled. Make sure the P light comes on when in park before putting the console cover back on.
