how difficult is it to replace the egr valve. It looks like it is on the back of engine going into the manifold. Any tips would be appreciated.

Best way to replace the EGR is to remove the air cleaner housing and tubing going to the throttle body. Once that's removed, that'll give you slightly better access; it'll require a lot of bending and twisting to get to it.
