86 El Camino 305 Stalls When Hot- Helpgoat455 02-05-2005, 11:16 AM Anyone ever have this problem? When my 86 ELCO is fully warm and I've driven it for about 45 minutes or so, I get intermittent stalls especially when I'm accelerating. Almost like the carb is being deprived of gas. I have been told by a mechanic friend of mine that it could possibly be a switch in my tranny, the name of it that doesn't come to mind at the moment. However I'm thinking it's a fuel problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. 7D8SS 02-05-2005, 05:05 PM Could be the oxygen sensor located in the exhaust manifold. May even be a clogged catalytic converter. Is your engine stock? Is it carbed or injected? Jon goat455 02-05-2005, 06:51 PM Could be the oxygen sensor located in the exhaust manifold. May even be a clogged catalytic converter. Is your engine stock? Still has the 4 barrel carb. 7D8SS 02-05-2005, 09:46 PM Does it actually stall, as in engine stopping, or does it seem to lose power as in not responding to throttle? I'm leaning toward clogged cat. Can you get it tested? Jon goat455 02-06-2005, 03:46 PM Does it actually stall, as in engine stopping, or does it seem to lose power as in not responding to throttle? I'm leaning toward clogged cat. Can you get it tested? Jon Jon, I think I'm also leaning toward the cat. The symptoms feel like the carb chokes when I step on the gas, especially going up hill. This past year the car barely passed the smog test and my mechanic said it was possibly due to a bad cat. I think I'll replace it and then hopefully this will solve the problem. Thanks for your input Jon. elky1987 05-06-2007, 09:13 PM I have a 87 with the same problems. Sometimes it starts acting up in 20 minutes. Was told it might be a vacumn or overheated coil. Hopefully someone will come up with the correct fix Blue Bowtie 05-12-2007, 10:25 AM Welcome Aboard! While it is a good idea to search the board archives for problems which might be similar, it is better to post a new thread than to resurrect an old one. frogman6042 05-18-2007, 07:36 AM i would go with the cat first but i ran into a car one time that we couldnt figure it out for a while had everybody look at it and it ended up being the ignition module in the distributor after it ran for a while and warmed up it would close one circut inside and run ruff then die and wouldnt start back till it cooled of then do it again good luck with yours ......... Midnight_Fenrir 08-04-2007, 11:43 PM I was having a simular issue with my 82 Elk. Turns out my feul pump was dying... thank god for old cars, as it was a cheep, easy fix... unlike modern vehicles where the pump is in the gastank and can cost a fortune...
