How cold is it when you try the first time?

What condition is your battery in? New, DOA? Terminals clean?

What grade of engine oil is in your crankcase? Use a lighter weight for colder weather makes life easier on your starter-motor.

When was the last time you checked your spark-plug gap?
What's the resistance looking like on your ignition wires?

I've run 318s in several vehicles, including my first car a 1969 Plymouth Valiant. It always fired up 1st time GO in cold weather - not bad for a California car transplanted to the east coast. Wifey's Durango w/318 and 150k on the clock and fires up before you can turn the ignition key all the way to start position.

In the garage? I haven't been able to get engines going by themselves when it's -45 in the wind.

I had the same exact problem with my '91 318. I replaced the coolent temp. sensor, drained and refilled my coolent, and replaced the thermostate, and i have not had a problem sence. Its cheep enough to give it a shot. Stupid little things like that make these trucks do weird things. Hope this helps.

the coolant temp sensor is the choke on a fuel injected motor.i would start there

CHECK THE TIMING

You cannot check the timing on it,not adjustable. If you mess with the distribitor, the service engine soon light will go off and it will be a camshaft position sensor code.Thats right, the camshaft position sensor is inside the distribitor.Check the fuel pressure,it might be the fuel pump going bad and is not cheap.
