'02 SE Climate Control Lights

I recently had a hard time getting rid of my old 86 cougar which I never had a problem I couldn't figure out, almost 2 months ago I bought a GM certified used 02 bonneville se and since the LCD on the radio is half fadded like the crystals are leaky(?) and on the climate control cluster buttons have 4 of the 8 backlights not working. Much to my surprise I'm told by GM; Custom Care warranty does not cover these things. My question is what controls or would cause half of the blower control button lights to stop working and what would I do to fix that? Thanks!
