I see where people are getting codes on testing. What type of equipment would one buy to test and how much is it?

Autozone will check codes for free for OBDII cars, which began with your 96, so there is really no need to buy the equipment. They are not cheap. I have seen cheap ones at various auto parts store for around $80.
