Clunking noise in rear suspensionemutimes 01-28-2005, 07:45 AM Someone please help me, i bought a 1994 2.2litre camry and i has a very annoying clunking noise coming from the rear left side strut. The car has new tyres and i also changed the strut from where the noise was coming from but its still there, the noise occurs mostly on bumpy roads sounds like metal hitting metal, but the noise cant be heard when im on the freeway or going fast on smooth roads. ive checked everything under the car and it seems fine and the strut has been changed. Can anyone help please the clunking noise it is really driving me crazy. Brian R. 01-28-2005, 09:17 AM It is likely that it is your sway bar. Either tighten the ends (which mayt be loose) or replace the bushings and polish the sway bar with a strip of emery cloth where it touches the bushings. burchard 01-28-2005, 03:51 PM It is likely that it is your sway bar. Either tighten the ends (which mayt be loose) or replace the bushings and polish the sway bar with a strip of emery cloth where it touches the bushings. Apart from checking the endlink of the swaybar, if you have never changed the swaybar bushings and you have more than 150 K in your car, that probably will make the clunk disapear. Is a very simple job.. moonshine 01-28-2005, 07:52 PM Apart from checking the endlink of the swaybar, if you have never changed the swaybar bushings and you have more than 150 K in your car, that probably will make the clunk disapear. Is a very simple job.. check your rear caliper bolt. it could be missing. The person who change the brake pads might have forgotten to put the bolt back .The brake caliper is held on by a pin and by an 8 mm bolt. If the bolt is missing, the caliper will swing up and down when driving on rough road thus hitting the inside of you rim producing a metal to metal clunking noise. Strider327 01-28-2005, 10:22 PM Besides checking swaybar, endlinks, bushings, brackets, and other bolts. Check the insulators that sit between the strut and spring, it could be possible it been damaged and the spring is hitting the fender of the car. The insulator is the black rubber thing. Good Luck, Calvin emutimes 01-28-2005, 11:38 PM thanks for that, i checked the swaybar i was able to mome it a little, the rubbers on it a definately worn out, theres something like oil or grease coming out of one of the rubbers. Ill change the bushes and keep you guys informed, um by the way are thr bushes expensive and how would i go about changing them. Mike Gerber 01-29-2005, 04:45 PM The bushings are around $15 each at the dealer. It should be the same as my 98 which I changed recently. Jack up the rear of the car and support it securely on jackstands. You can probably get at each side by taking off the wheels on each side and reaching in or work from underneath on your back. You will see a clamp over the bushing. It has 2 bolts which I believe are 12MM heads. Just remove the 2 bolts and the clamp will come off easily. The bushings have a slot cut in them to facilitate getting it off the swaybar. You will see this when you have the new ones in your hand. Just take off the old bushing, put on the new one, and reinstall the clamp with the 2 bolts. It's that easy. I would recommend some penetrating oil on the bolt threads and waiting about 15-30 minutes before you try to remove them. It really is an easy DIY job. It cured my rattle. Mike emutimes 02-04-2007, 11:42 PM Sorry guys, i know im 2 years late in the reply, i ended up selling the car without changing the brushings. This guy who came to buy it never bothered to testdrive the car & it also had a massive vibration in the engine and 3 major oil leaks. He gave me a deposit on the spot & picked it up the next day.lol I was just looking up my username "emutimes" in yahoo and i saw this forum and came in to see what it was about & i remembered that i posted here when i had my camry.
