Idle begins to race very high after I start

I am looking for some help on a very peculiar problem.

My 94 Metro 3 cyl 1.0L was running fine until one day last week I shut the car off and went into a store, came back and when I started it up again the idle just began racing very high. No tach so I don't know how high but I would guess 3-4000 RPM. This is a severe problem because when I go to put it into drive the automatic transmission really kicks in with a thud.

Does anyone know what might be causing the idle problem? I doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold. Another symptom is that when I get the car up to 40 mph, and the just barely push on the gas it wants the kind of lurch like it is getting gas and then being starved. When I am on the highway and I release the gas the car begins to decelerate at a very rapid rate from the engine slowing the car down.

Thanks :banghead:

First thing to check would be to pop the hood and look for a vacuum hose that may have come off, or any wiring/connection that may have come loose.

same thing happened my 93 metro, was a faulty vacum hose to map sensor. Also check EGR valve,if stuck open or closed.

Thanks for the help, but there are no obvious hoses that are unplugged. Where is the EGR valve, and how do I know if it is working properly? :dunno:

I need to know that answer too - my boyfriend (aka my mechanic!) probably knows.... but I'm having identical problems with my '91..
thanks!
