Transmission Shifting Trouble1badjeep 01-24-2005, 02:04 PM Hi Guys, I have a 96 GC ltd, 5.2 ltr 256,000 kms its a great truck and running flawless thus far, the trouble im having is for the past few weeks, whether its been driven warm or cold, shifting from 2nd to 3rd has been tricky, its rev's high trying to go into third, i play with the peddal, bring the rpms down and it shift fine into third, if I play with it, no problem, The fluid was flushed less then a yr ago, color seems good. Am I looking at a new tranny, can LUCAS buy me some time? any advice would help. 2nd part ?, how good is the 99 GC ltd? first gen is ok? Thanks JDPascal 01-24-2005, 02:23 PM That is a common problem, especially with the mileage and age if you haven't had transmission work done before. The forward clutch has to apply for 3rd gear to take effect and the clutch seal is leaking. Only remedie is to remove and overhaul. Mine has been like that for a year now. It works good when the weather is warm and I haven't had the time to pull it and reseal it. Thanks wow, a yr, i thouhgt mine was going to go anytime now, do you think LUCAS will help at all? and when you say overhaul, you mean tranny rebuild right. JDPascal 01-24-2005, 02:40 PM Ya, I just drive it accordingly. It is a bit annoying when accelerating into traffic on a down shift some times. Overhaul is disassembly and reseal at a minimum. Inspect the hard parts and clutch discs too and replace what is necessary. JD JDPascal 01-24-2005, 02:43 PM I hesitate to recommend any of the seal swell additives because they can cause other seal problems after awhile. This hasn't happend because the seals are hard, just worn. Ususally because of a poor finish on the inside of the hub where the seal rubs. (so I've been told) JD 1badjeep 01-24-2005, 02:43 PM THanks JD, you've been most helpfull, I was leaning towards the bands before, I will see what my tranny shop says about the over haul price. Once again, Thanks McCann 01-24-2005, 11:04 PM 1badjeep, Check out the thread "cold transmission problems"...last post on 1-22-05. I have a couple of posts in there and I would try that before replacing a tranny. The BG transmission flush worked for my 97 GCL. Good Luck Mike 1BADGTO 01-26-2005, 03:28 PM I have used Prolong transmission treatment for over 200,000 miles and have seen no negative side effects on my 42RE. jacclark 02-03-2005, 12:31 AM What is Prolong transmission treatment? 1BADGTO 02-03-2005, 02:25 PM It's an additive (I think comes in pint bottle) you can buy at NAPA etc. I like to add it after I do a tranny oil change.
