95 GC, 4.0, Select-Trac (2wd - 4H - N - 4L). I was driving in moderately icy conditions, so I was in and out of 4h several times. Engagement was smooth, but when I disengage the 4wd, it doesn't seem to disengage immediately, and after driving a very short distance (probably <100yds) there's a loud clunking noise from the front end and the 4wd disengages.

How serious is this likely to be? Winter has finally come to the south, so I'll need the Jeep ready for duty.

Thanks,
Steve

My Selec-Trac 4.0 also hesitates when disengaging 4wd, it also hesitates when I engage 4wd, unless I do the following...

In order to make 4wd engage immediately, I accelerate at a steady pace & then throw the transfer case in 4H, then let off the gas (with your hand still on the T-Case lever) & you should feel a slight "clunk"! The clunk lets you know that your in the gear of your choice.

I also do this when disengaging, otherwise I'll drive for a short distance like you before my 4wd engages/disengages!

I'm not sure how loud your clunking noise is, but you may want to check out your U-Joints.
