I've got a 97 grand cherokee limited with the 5.2l. It runs very rough when cold especially if you're light on the gas. Sometimes while at normal running temperature it will start idling very roughly for a few seconds and then go back to normal. Anyone have some advice or ideas of what it could be. (fuel filter maybe?) The engines got 130000 miles on it. Thanks a lot everyone.

When was the last time you changed the plugs, wires, distributer cap or rotor??

Could also be an injector.

I would start with the plugs or take it where they can put it on a "scope".

go with what JD said along with a good Throttle Body Cleaning.

Thanks for all the posts. I've recently changed both the plugs and the plug wires. I also have a brand new throttle body. The check engine light does actually come on periodically, but not necessarily at times when the engine feels like its misfiring. JD Paschal, what will having the car put on a scope tell me? Thanks a lot everyone

Should beable to narrow down to which cylinders are affected and you will see on the scope trace where there is additional resistance in the ignition secondary circuit.

Scope will likely be difficult to access at the time when the possible missfires occure though there are some that are portable and can be used for a test drive.

If the check engine lite came on, it may have set codes. Have the codes read and go from there.
