I went to get an oil change at my friend's dad's work (STS), and as he was doing a total check of the car, he noticed a large crack in the exhaust manifold. He told me he had a woman come in a few days prior to my visit today, and said there was a recall on the part, and that Hyundai replaces it free of charge.

Does anyone know anything about this, and is the information iI was given valid?
If I don't get the exhaust manifold changed, what will happen to my car?

There is a new recall on 99-02 Elantras. Call your Hyundai dealership and they will tell you if your car falls within the recall. If it is, it is replaced for free.

I have replaced so many of these manifolds. The start of the problem is noticed on cold start up for maybe 30 secs. just sounding like your normal exhaust leak and then it goes away as soon as it gets some heat in it.

Just wondering about the crack... what eventually is going to happen if you left the crack unfixed? The engine lose horse power? Can you patch it up with one of those exhaust pipe mending kits?
