I have 1999 Honda Passport 4 Dr EX 4WD Auto 3.2L V6
It has a high-pitched loud whining noise when tranny selector is set to D. It started intermittently and now everytime you put the tranny in D then you hear this loud high-pitched like whining noise.

You can barely hear it inside the vehicle when doors are closed and noise coming out loud outside. Does anybody have similar experience with this kind of problem and what might possibly the problem?

does this happen while the truck is running? Can you put the key in, turn to accessories, drop to D and see if it makes the sound? Does it make the sound in 3?

I am having a similar noise, but mine goes with the speed, not RPMs. I think it is in the transfer case. We have had some really cold weather here the past few days and I think it may be cause by the lubricant being so thick with the cold temp. I am going to have the lube changed and see what that does for me. It seems to go away after I have traveled a few miles and got everything good and warmed up.

The high-pitched loud whining noise only shows up when the engine is running. The noise shows up when the tranny selector gear is in Park, Neutral, Drive, 2, 3.

I do not hear this loud whining noise if I just turn the ignition switch to accessories and move the tranny selector out of Park to Neutral, Drive, 2, 3. The high-pitched loud whining noise does not show up if the engine is not running.

When the engine is running and vehicle is in motion, the high-pitched noise comes and go.

Let me know if that noise goes away after changing the lubricant.

sounds like we may be expeiencing different things. Mine only occurs when the vehicle is moving and get higher with the speed. Sounds like yours may be in the tranny somewhere. But anyway, I will let you know what I find.

I had this same symptom myself on my 98 last month. I thought it was the transmission so I got underneath and found a small leak so I thought well it may just need fluid. I drained and filled also changed the filter. The noise was still there. I later found out that it was caused by the idle pulley bearings. I drove it for so long :loser: before coming to this conclusion that by the time I found the problem the bearings had seized up and the belt began to melt away  . When I removed the pulley the bearings fell into my hands. $55 (40 for the belt and 15 for the pulley) and 15 minutes later I had the pulley removed and a new belt installed and I was on my way.

I suggest removing the serpentine belt and turning all pulleys making sure they turn with little to no resistance. This may or may not be your resolution, but it would be worth a look see. :2cents:

Excellent advice. That idler pulley up high on the 1998+ is known to fail when they get up in age/mileage. They can give off a noise that can be hard to trace.

check for vacuum leaks

I'll do what everyone suggested and report back any results or fix.

Yep. Many have reported a squeel, screech, whine, whistle type noise from a bad intake manifold gasket (vac leak making it vibrate like a reed at the site of the break). You do also get a stronger vac pull when you put the truck into gear @ idle, maybe making the noise louder.

Update:
Well changed the lube and it wasn't quite as cold today as when I was getting the noise but close, Anyway, the whine has been quieted, the lube was nasty too, previous owner I bet had never done it.

I had these same symptoms on my 99 Rodeo. I would get that high pitch whenever I accelerated. I just recently replaced the Idler Pulley, which fell apart, and the high pitch has stopped!

Aye, mine is also making coolant good poof. The noise only occurs to me when i first start it and once i drive it for a few it goes away.
