Wheel hub bearing assembly

Is it true that the wheel hub bearing cannot be repaired and needs the have the whole assembly replaced with 2000 models? Somehow I feel like I got myself ripped off by going to the dealer for this, but I don't know any good mechanics where I am.

yes it is true. they cost about $140.

If you have any mechanical experience you can do it yourself. I just did mine last week. There is a lot of info on this in the blazer forum.

So they weren't lying about it having to be replaced but I did get ripped off for parts... I'm paying something like 700 for the whole repair. Well, I guess that's just a lesson learned.

Ouch! You must have a 2wd...I forgot they are more expensive. Up to $500 for the assembly depending on where you get it.

2wd is more expensive? no, I have 4wd, and the parts were expensive because I went to the dealer.

Yes 2wd is alot more expensive. $700 for a 4wd you got screwed. When you go in to pay....have them put some of the extra grease on your butt so it doesn't hurt so bad.

I don't think you need to worry about it unless you have the symptoms. If you do have problems with it, don't go to the dealer like I did.

You shouldn't worry about it. Yes alot of people have had to change theirs, but the symtoms will be obvious and you can change it before it becomes a hazard to you or your truck. Here are the symtoms:

Humming accompanied by a vibration
It gets worse when you turn in one direction
goes away when you turn the other way.

They ain't hard to replace. I did both sides on my 2000 Sonoma. The only special tool was a cheap puller to pull the hub off the shaft and I had to purchase the metric socket for the hub (Don't remeber the size). The hubs were $100 each at a local parts house.

I did drive the truck several thousand miles with the growling without problems before I replaced them.

They're $140.00 each for the Blazer,Jimmy, and Bravada.
The Socket is a deep well 36mm (most places charge $15- $20 for the socket)

You will also need an 18mm for the hub bolts. (A 3/4 SAE will work but has a little slop if the bolts are tight you may damage the head.
