Hey what's up? My girlfriends little brother has a 92na Z(auto) and has been having power problems.. his car completely died, we determined it was the battery. He replaced the battery with a new one and it ran fine.. but now it's dead again, so now we determined that it's the alternator .. I drive a 1990 honda accord and replaced the alternator fairly easy.. i'm wondering if the Z would be just as easy. My girlfriend had just called me and told me that he was going to buy an new alternator for $130 which i guess is a good price (unless u guys tell otherwise) since i got mine for $110. The shop offered to replace it for him for a $80 an hour labor fee.. not sure how long the job will be .. but if you guys can help out.. give me and him some pointers and insight if the job is easy.. and maybe a how to and what special tools needed.. or any extras like belts n stuff .. that would be great. i just want to save him some money and get him to work on his car since the Z is awesome (imo) people don't take the opportunity to work on their cars anymore.. heck it would be sweet to work on the Z myself.. haha.. alrite hope someone can help.. thanx

Sigh... changing the alternator on a Z..... what a pain in the ass! I had a few shops quote me at $200+. It's not easy buddy... I've done it twice and although it's gotten easier for me, it's not a walk in the park. It's gonna take you a couple of hours maybe longer since you have never done it. First you gotta jack the car up. Secondly you have to drop the lower radiator hose and front sway bar... then pray your hands can shrink a bit and have at her... just wait until you have to re-install it! That lil' retaining nut is gonna piss you off! Don't mean to disuade you... sorry! But if you have some mechanical know-how I would DIY! You don't wanna pay some greasy sonuvabitch $200+ for this! Good deal on the alternator... I got mine for $145 with lifetime warranty.
