the problems happened just this morning. In the past two days, i drove more than 300 miles. there was no problem.

when the transmission shift is at D position and I go forward at a very low speed( just after release the brake), less than 5 miles, then I press the brake pedal to stop the car. Before the car stops, the car will shake once. and i can feel the vibration is from the under of the car. Just like i move the transmission shift from D to P when car is still moving. But when the transmission shift is at R position and I go backward, everything is fine. no shake when I press the break pedal to stop the car.

I haven't try at high speed. because I am scared to do so.

anyone has ideas? hope it is not the problem of the transmission.

Thanks

could be your hub... check it out by jacking up your car and pushing the wheel back and forth, i say this because the same thing happend to me.. the brake was actually forcing the caliper and wheel out, causing my brakes to be outta whack and that odd clunk, like my rear end was locking up

That is a hard thing to diagnose.. it could be a caliper or rear drum that is hanging up and releasing after you come to a stop. You also might need to have your transmission just flushed and refilled. The cable might also need to be adjusted that controls the shifter and what drive its in. It could be bordering Drive and neutral.. Its just a hard thing to diagnose with out actually being there.

check that your wheel lugs are tight! It could be a lose wheel!

Or it could even be your first experience with shitty GM ABS brakes

Yeah they are always fun! come spring I'm unhooking the sensors on mine! Cuts in too soon and works awful! Only car I ever had ABS on and will hopefully be the only car I ever have with it!

After I drove about half mile, the problem was gone. until now, it didn't appear again. some mechanians said it might be the rear brake was not working well because of rust. after driving, the rust was gone. then everything is fine. is that possible? thanks

If it's fairly warm the friction surfaces of both the rear drums and front rotors can get a light covering of rust. This isn't likely to be the problem though as it would only be a very light amount of surface rust and not anything particulalry abrasive unless the car had been sitting for a long time. The type of rust you'll get can be wiped off with your finger!

My 96 skylark, does something similar. It shakes the whole car when I hit the brakes above 40 mph. The pedal and steering wheel also vibrate, it has gotten worse. Problem is very bad increasingly at higher speeds.

But something else not related as far as I know, My check engine and ets off lights came on and won't go off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Your brake rotors are warped or at least one is and need replacing, you'll need pads also. do both sides together, always do!! Your Check engine light, is the car running any different at all? have you noticed a drop in fuel consumption, power etc.....?

The brakes are new all the way around. The tires, shocks, struts are also new.

The only notice is lights, I see no difference in power or fuel economy. These lights came on a couple of times before together but went off in a couple of days.
Also the Abs light comes on at 70, and dosen't go off until I restart the car.

Teh it souds like they need re-tightening. Or you ABS is f*cked, which would probably explain the Check eng light! Check the sensors at the front calipers.
